ENP STAFF REPORTS

April is officially something to "wine" about -- as the Niagara County Legislature declared April to be "Wine Month" at its Tuesday meeting.
Legislator John Syracuse spoke on the importance of the wineries to the county. In accepting
the proclamation, Niagara Wine Trail President Oscar Vizcarra thanked the elected officials for their support.
Wine Trail Vice President Erik Gustafson explained why we have a burgeoning wine industry in Niagara County. Explaining the importance of both the escarpment and Lake Ontario, he describe the ideal conditions here. He buttressed his discussion by mentioned the various gold medals and other
awards our wineries have received. He concluded by sharing his journey to owning a winery in New York. After attending Purdue University, he and his wife Shane explored various areas. After looking at California and other locales, they decided that the opportunities in Western New York outweighed
all others.
Proposing a toast to the industry, Event Committee Chair Margo Sue Bittner recognized the farmers and the organizations that support the wineries. She encouraged everyone to buy local, including using the Uncork NY restaurant cards when dining out. Thanking the legislators for their support, she asked that they sign a pledge to serve only New York State wines at any of their functions, as state Sen. Rob Ortt and Assembly members Jane Corwin and John Ceretto have. In concluding her toast, she reminded everyone to find local wines at the wineries, in liquor stores and at local farmers markets.
Syracuse concluded the presentation by presenting the proclamation to Vizcarra and Gustafson. For more information about the wineries, to get copies of the UnCork NY wine card or wine pledge or learn about the wine trail events, go to www.NiagaraWineTrail.org or email Contact@NiagaraWineTrail.org.

The Niagara Wine Trail's Taste of the Trail event more than doubled its attendance this past weekend from last year's event. And it's not done yet.
Eleven Niagara Wine Trail wineries took park in the event Saturday and Sunday. The sunny weather, combined with delicious mouth-watering pairings, made for an excellent weekend of wine tastings along the trail. With tickets to the event also being available at the door, the trail saw over 500 participants for the event.
The second weekend of the event, this coming Saturday and Sunday, is expected to draw in many visitors as well. The Taste of the Trail runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
"We have over 300 tickets sold for the event this weekend, we except that number to continue to rise as the week goes on, and then except people to come the day of too and buy their tickets at the door," says Elizabeth Maute, the trail's media coordinator.
Event tickets are $25/person in advance online until 9 p.m. Thursday or $30/person at wineries during the event. Each ticket includes a tasting of three wines and one food sample at each of the 11 participating wineries for that weekend, and a commemorative wine glass from your starting winery. The winery participation and food pairings for this weekend are as follows:
Event attendees are welcome to visit different wineries each day in any order they choose. As a reminder, ticket prices do not include applicable sales tax or transportation.
Guests touring by bus or limo, regardless of size, should call the wineries in advance to make an appointment to alleviate congestion during this popular event.
A valid photo ID with proof of age over 21 is also required to participate in wine tasting.

The snow and cold led to several cancelations the past few days — but it also led to at least one extension.
The Niagara Wine Trail announced this afternoon that since the inclement weather — especially in Erie County ― has kept people at home this weekend, they decided to extend the annual "Be Mine With Wine" event into next weekend, Feb. 20-22. Pre-purchased tickets will be valid next weekend, and tickets will again be sold at the door.
The wine trail anticipates full participation in this extension, but say they will update the list as they hear from wineries throughout the weekend.
Those unable to attend this weekend or next weekend, can exchange their tickets for a future event. Email sales@niagarawinetrail.org with your order confirmation number, the name the tickets were placed under, and which upcoming event you'd like to use them towards.

The Niagara Wine Trail has released its 2015 calendar of events and made available online ticket sales for its February, April, and June events. The July Wine Festival and Fall/Winter event tickets will go on sale in the coming months.
The very popular April "Taste of the Trail" wine and food pairing event is back again for 2015. The event was changed to be two weekends last year, with half of the wineries participating each weekend.
"We changed the way we did this event last year and it was extremely successful for us" said Coordinator Elizabeth Maute. "We base a lot of what we do with our events on feedback from our customers. They said they loved wine and food pairing, and they liked the two-weekend option. We want to give them what they want."
Taste of the Trail features half of the member wineries the first weekend, and the other wineries during the second weekend. Attendees can purchase tickets for just one of the weekends for $20 in advance, or both weekends at a discounted rate of $35 in advance, plus tax.
The wine trail has also added two new members in Oreans County, bringing the total number of wineries on the trail to 22 — including four in Orleans County.
"It's wonderful to see the expansion of the trail heading west," says Maute, "we expanded the trail into Monroe County not long ago with the hopes that this would encourage more businesses to join and work with us. It has. Being along the wine trail is a huge benefit to local businesses."
Besides growing the total to 22, the new members bring more diversity to the wine trail. In Medina, newly opened member 810 Meadworks, offers visitors a selection of meads (honey wine). In Albion, Salamaca Estate Winery features a selection of traditional wines ranging from dry viniferas to sweet native varieties. More details and contact information for 810 Meadworks and Salamaca Estate Winery may be found on the wine trail's website under the wineries tab.
More information and the complete 2015 schedule may be found on the Niagara Wine Trail's website: http://niagarawinetrail.org/category/events.
