George Root interviews Lockport Express Coach Frank Vecchio following
an Express home game in 2015. Vecchio and several others are putting
together a fundraiser for Root, who found out in late December that he has
kidney cancer. (ENP FILE PHOTO)
In late December, ENP's own George N. Root III was diagnosed with kidney cancer. The 48-year-old writer and radio personality decided immediately that if it was between the cancer and him, he'd win -- even if the doctors told him that the odds were not in his favor.

Jan. 11, Root had his kidney removed -- and most of the cancer with it. His prognosis improved significantly. But some cancer remains. And George will soon begin chemotherapy in hopes of beating it down.

The doctors' visits, recovery time and time spent worrying has kept him from being able to work as much as he usually would. Mounting medical bills added to that, creating a financial burden that he simply cannot handle without help.

As such, a team of his friends, including those close to the Lockport Express, have planned a Valentine's Day fundraiser for the Class of 1985 LHS graduate at Cornerstone Community Federal Credit Union Arena. The fundraiser includes a pair of hockey games, basket raffles, 50/50 and more.

The Feb. 14 Lockport Express' 1 p.m. home game against the Wilkes Barre Miners will be played in Root's honor, as will a 4 p.m. Lockport Hockey Alumni game. Tickets to the pair of games are $20 per person or $40 for a family of four. All proceeds will be donated to Root to help pay some of his medical costs.

Howie Balaban, left, and George Root call a home
Lockport Express game.
The Lockport Express will auction off player-worn jerseys during the event, and baskets are being sought for the basket raffle. Fundraiser team members, including Lockport Express Owner Steve Bueme, Lockport Express Coach Frank Vecchio, Howell Motors Ford Owner Mike Landers, Lockport City Court Judge Bill Watson, Kim Milani of Sub Delicious, Cornerstone Arena Board Member Tate Pitrello, ENP/ENR Contributor Craig Bacon, and ENP Co-Publishers Heather Grimmer and Scott Leffler will be seeking donations from area businesses.

Businesses and individuals that have signed on for donations include ART247, Capelli Salon, Confer Plastics, DeFlippo's Restaurant, East Niagara Post, Family Video, Howell Motors and the Landers family, Adam Hudson, Mills Jewelers, the Penalty Box, Janet Pitrello, Pulp 716, Riviera Theatre, Schoolhouse Wellness Center, Sub Delicious, Transit Drive-In Theatre, Tom's Diner, and Windsor Village.

Additionally, a GoFundMe page has been created for those who wish to donate but cannot attend the fundraiser. The page, GoFundMe.com/LoveGeorge, had a $50 donation from Milani before having even been made public. The listed goal is $5,000.

"To say that George is a friend to Lockport would be a massive understatement of the word 'friend,' " according to the GoFundMe page. "He pushed for the betterment of the city and region through a weekly column in the Union-Sun & Journal for years before joining East Niagara Post as a contributor. He adds his wisdom and sense of humor to East Niagara Radio hockey broadcasts as well as the weekly radio show, 'Shenanigans,' which exists primarily due to George's insistence that the world needs more of him."

Outside of Lockport, Root is well-known to the NA3EHL hockey community as a broadcaster of Lockport Express games and the director/editor of the weekly "Catching Up with the Lockport Express" YouTube series done for East Niagara Post.

All funds raised will help to defray Root's hospital and doctors' bills. On the off chance that more money is raised than is needed, they will be used at George's discretion. The guy could probably use a vacation.

Dr. Todd Retell from Lockport Dental Group, Valerie Oleksik, president of
The MINI Cooper Club of WNY, Maria Fava, founder of the Believe Toy Drive
2015, and Santa Shaw from Lockport Dental Group gather up some of the
hundreds of toys that will be donated to patients at Women & Children’s
Hospital of Buffalo. (CONTRIBUTED PHOTO)
For the third year in a row, kids who are receiving treatment at Women & Children’s Hospital in Buffalo will have a brighter Christmas thanks to Lockport resident Maria Fava, founder of the Believe Toy Drive. And the toys will be delivered in style, courtesy of the Mini Cooper Club of WNY.

“A few years ago I had major brain surgery at Women and Children’s Hospital and while recovering I had the pleasure of spending some time with the children on my floor,” Fava said. “So at Christmas I want to ‘pay it forward’ and return some of those smiles that were given to me.”

New and unwrapped toys, as well as cash, have been collected – and are still being accepted – at the following locations in Lockport:

  • Molinaro’s Ristorante, 90 Walnut St.
  • Lockport Music Center, 5996 Snyder Drive
  • Spring Lake Winery, 7373 Rochester Road
  • Lockport Dental Group 39 Elizabeth Drive
  • Advantage Physical Therapy, 5556 Davison Road

Delivering all those toys will also take quite an effort, and was spearheaded by Lockport Dental Group, a major supporter of the annual toy drive.

“We were looking at finding a U-Haul or something else to transport everything,” said Dr. Todd Retell. “But I also knew that one of my patients – Valerie Oleksik – was the president of The MINI Cooper Club of WNY and they love to do things for the community. So last year we pulled it off and it was amazing to see all those Mini Coopers cruising away with all the gifts.”

The MINI Club of WNY is a group of MINI Cooper enthusiasts located throughout all of WNY and currently has over 350 members.

“We get together to go on scenic drives, participate in car shows and just share our love for our cars. We also have participated in charitable events such as the Ride for Roswell, The Niagara Wine Trail Share the Bounty Food Drive as well as the Believe Toy Drive,” said Oleksik. “We’re thrilled to be part of this event again this year.”

In addition, the local Santa with a dental degree, Dr. James Shaw, has been instrumental in making this year’s drive the best one yet.  “Every year the event keeps getting bigger – and we’ll be delivering even more toys than last year, which is fantastic,” Shaw said.

According to Fava, the annual toy drive lets people focus on the traditional meaning of Christmas. “Let us appreciate family, enjoy giving to others, take part in selfless acts, focus on religious beliefs and celebrations, miracles of man-kind, helping others, romance, love and peace,” she said.  “I hope in the upcoming years to expand the charity to include a dinner for the families with a Christmas themed party/event with food donations from local restaurants and Christmas activities for the children.  Please contact me if you would like to get involved for next year’s planning.”

For more information  you can contact Fava at 940-1045 or mariamadelinefava@gmail.com. There is also a Facebook page entitled Believe Toy Drive 2015 that includes a “wish list” from the hospital. Fava also has created a GoFundMe page where monetary donations for toy purchases may be made.

ALBANY -- New York State is partnering with Walmart, Wegmans, the National Supermarket Association, The Coca-Cola Company, PepsiCo and FreshDirect this Thanksgiving Week to help deliver meals to feed more than 35,000 people statewide.

"Each year, Thanksgiving provides a time to not only join with family and friends to reflect on what we are grateful for, but also it is also a time to help fellow New Yorkers," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. "The partnerships we have forged with these companies ensure that families throughout the state will have a warm, nutritious meal that they can enjoy with loved ones. As the holiday season continues, I encourage all New Yorkers to find ways to pitch in and do something to help someone in need."

Thanks to generous food donations from Walmart, Wegmans and the National Supermarket Association, meals are being assembled and packaged to feed over 35,000 New Yorkers statewide. Each meal includes turkey, stuffing, pumpkin pie, vegetables, cranberry sauce and potatoes.

Additionally, The Coca-Cola Company and PepsiCo have donated over 500 cases of beverages, including juice and other drinks, to be distributed with the meals. FreshDirect has provided thousands of boxes to ensure the meals are properly packaged and delivered.

The Walmart Foundation's partnership with the State of New York this Thanksgiving is part of its overall commitment to assist communities and families throughout the state. During the past fiscal year, the Foundation donated more than $25 million to charitable efforts in New York State, including donations of nearly 13 million pounds of food to local food banks — more than 10 million meals to those in need.

Walmart Director of Public Affairs and Government Relations Jason Klipa said, "We are proud to once again partner with Governor Cuomo and the State of New York to put a little extra joy on the Thanksgiving tables of thousands of New Yorkers. While the holiday season can often remind us that there are many in need, we hope everybody can find even the smallest ways to help those who are less fortunate throughout the entire year."

In addition to the meals being donated this week, Wegmans also works year-round to fight hunger. In 2014 alone, Wegmans donated 8 million pounds of food and raised nearly $2 million for local food banks and organizations fighting hunger in Central New York, Western New York and Southern Tier.

Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. CEO Danny Wegman said, "Hunger never takes a holiday, which is why we support food banks and hunger relief agencies year round in the communities where we have stores. Helping at this time of year is especially meaningful for us."

National Supermarket Association Executive Director Haile Rivera said, "No one deserves to go hungry on Thanksgiving and the National Supermarket Association is proud to help make sure that doesn't happen. We thank Governor Cuomo for organizing this partnership and helping ensure families throughout New York are able to enjoy a full Thanksgiving meal."

Coca-Cola Refreshments New York Metro General Manager Francis McGorry said, "Coca-Cola associates live and work throughout the state, so it’s important to us that we do our part to help our neighbors in times of need, especially during the holiday season. We have a long-standing history of helping communities and appreciate Governor Cuomo’s leadership to share some happiness through the holiday food drive.”

Co-founder and the Chief Executive Officer of FreshDirect Jason Akerman said, "FreshDirect is proud to partner with New York State to help our friends and neighbors in need. Thanks to Governor Cuomo's leadership, this effort ensures tens of thousands of New Yorkers will have a warm meal on Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving and generosity go hand in hand and we hope that everyone can find a way to help others this holiday season."

New Directions Youth and Family Services -- parent company to Wyndham Lawn in Lockport -- has launched its 2015 “Save a Christmas” program, an annual drive providing holiday gifts to low-income or single-parent families served by New Directions’ community-based programs through individual gift donations or family sponsorships.

The program, originally referred to as the “Angel Tree Program,” was first started in 2013 by Ashleigh MacLachlan, wrap-around care coordinator at New Directions.

“Save a Christmas” was inspired by MacLachlan’s personal experience of dealing with domestic violence and leaving home with her mother and brother when she was nine years old. As a child, she received a gift from an angel tree program which, according to Ashleigh, essentially “saved her Christmas.”

“That first Christmas we were involved with a program similar to the ‘Save a Christmas’ program,” said MacLachlan. “I specifically remember the gifts I received that year, and it meant so much to me that someone I didn’t know had gotten these things for me.”

Because of her own experience, MacLachlan decided to start an annual holiday donation program at New Directions to make Christmas a happier day for those with a similar background.

“Our annual program gives people in our community the opportunity to sponsor a family or donate a special gift on a child’s wish list that he or she probably would not have received otherwise,” said MacLachlan.

The program donated gifts to 67 children in 2013, and 250 children in 2014. The goal of this year’s program is to benefit at least 300 children in Niagara, Erie and Allegany counties.

To save ‘Save a Christmas’ for a child this holiday season, visit SaveAChristmas.org or contact Jeff Mendola, Director of Mission Advancement at New Directions, at 839-9500 or jmendola@ndyfs.org. Donations can be dropped off at Wyndham Lawn, 6395 Old Niagara Road.

The Transit Drive-In, which has occasionally shown night-time Buffalo Bills games over the past few years, is not airing tonight's game between the Bills and the New England Patriots -- because the NFL told them not to.

According to a post made this afternoon to the drive-in's Facebook page, the theater received a letter from the NFL stating that the drive-in had violated "the exclusive copyright rights of the NFL."

The letter goes on to explain that game broadcasts cannot be shown in exchange for an admission fee (the drive-in requested a $20 per-car donation for the recent Thursday Night Football showing, donating the proceeds to the Brian Moorman PUNT Foundation the Buffalo City Mission.), on any screen that isn't "a television type commonly used at home," or at a venue that doesn't regularly air sporting events ... without "the express written permission of the NFL."

The letter states that it hopes the airing was simply a misunderstanding.

Transit Drive-In Theatre owner Rick Cohen said he disagrees with the NFL's decision but will abide by it. He notes that the drive-in does not profit from showing the games and has donated all proceeds and snack bar proceeds to local charities.

Cohen adds, "When we asked the NFL if there was a 'form or process available in order to obtain the express written permission of the NFL to show individual game broadcasts,' we received no response."

Tonight's game airs on ESPN at 8:30 p.m.

Jane Corwin
Assemblywoman Jane Corwin's annual Western New York Food Drive, which is currently in progress, will be extended to run through the month of May.

Corwin, R-Clarence, says she has been proud to team up with a half dozen food pantries in Erie and Niagara Counties, as well as a number of Erie and Niagara County libraries that will be collecting canned goods and non-perishable items throughout the duration of the drive. All of the items donated will go to families here in Western New York.

“I’ve spoken with a number of not for profit and charitable organizations in my district and many food pantries struggle to fill their shelves this time of year," she said. "Following the holiday seasons these organizations run low on supplies. The people of Western New York always come through when helping those in need and by continuing to build awareness for hunger and donating items to help others, we can make a difference in people’s lives.” said Corwin.

“The local libraries in Erie and Niagara counties have been so gracious in their participation and allowing us to use their facilities as donation drop-off locations.” Corwin continued, “We had such great participation for our Winter Coat and Clothing Drive this past December, and it showed the compassion of our community.”

East Niagara drop-off locations include the Newfane Public Library and Lockport Public Library.

Transit Drive-In owner Rick Cohen will walk this route in hopes of
raising enough money for an Ohio drive-in to buy a digital
projector. (CONTRIBUTED PHOTO)
KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Rick Cohen is walking 1,034 miles from Kissimmee, Fla. to Camden, N.J.

Cohen, the owner of the Transit Drive-In Theatre, is undertaking this backpacking adventure in order to raise awareness for the plight of the drive-in industry — and funds for a small Ohio drive-in in need.

Beginning on Saturday, he will begin the 1,034 miles trek from Kissimmee, Fla., the site of the annual UDITOA Drive-In Owners Convention — which he is currently attending — to Camden, N.J., where the world's first drive-in opened on June 6, 1933. The backpacking journey is expected to take as long as six weeks.

"I plan to pretty much walk between 20 to 30 miles per day depending on weather conditions and how I'm feeling," Cohen said. "It's going to be a little bit of an adventure."

“Over the years, I have witnessed many drive-in theaters close and be sold for development, or sit unused and forgotten,” Cohen said. “Hundreds and thousands of drive-ins have closed around the United States over the past several decades, with the property they sit on being redeveloped for ‘higher uses.’ The most recent upswing in drive-in related sales and closures is being facilitated by a different and more alarming reason.”

As if seasonal drive-in theatres didn't already have enough going against them, technological changes in the way new movies are shown on their screens is requiring all theatres to replace 35mm projectors with expensive digital equipment, at a cost of roughly $75,000 per screen. Drive-ins which cannot financially afford the transition are being forced to go dark.

“I am very fortunate in that my drive-in is located in region with a population base large enough to support the investment, which for us was an outlay of $300,000 for all four of our screens in 2012,” Cohen said. “Drive-ins located in rural, less densely populated areas are having a much more difficult time.”

In the entire United States, the number of operational drive-ins at the end of 2014 fell to around 330 locations, down from around 350 sites only one year earlier. More family owned, rural drive-ins are expected to close over the next few years, as the supply of 35mm prints from the movie studios is gradually discontinued in favor of digital technology which they can't afford to purchase on their own.

“I am stepping up to help one of these drive-ins buy a new digital projector, so they can continue to provide the outdoor movie experience for their community,” Cohen explained. “The first drive-in which I have chosen to help make the conversion to digital is called the Auto-Vue, a single screen, family owned drive-in theatre located in Sidney, Ohio, which has been in continual operation each summer since 1956. Without financial assistance to make the transition to digital technology, this drive-in will eventually go dark.”

Cohen plans to raise enough through contributions to fund the Auto-Vue upgrade. But he hopes to raise more. Any funds which exceed the goal will go toward assisting additional drive-ins to make the conversion to digital.

“My goal is to raise enough money to assist at least one small-town, mom-and-pop drive-in to remain open, while at the same time raising national awareness about the difficulty which many rural, small town drive-ins are facing to survive,” Cohen said. “While I will technically be walking 1,034 miles by myself through nine east coast states, I will not be alone in spirit. The ghosts from thousands of closed American drive-in theatres and the memories of the people who miss them will be walking right beside me, along with the hopes of all the other small town drive-ins still struggling to keep their own big screen alive.”

Cohen has created a website, DriveInRescue.com, where he will share his travels and allow for the public to make donations. He plans on making daily updates to allow others to see the progress he has made on both fronts, and allow him to share his thoughts — and some photos — along the 1,034-mile walk.

“For the second year in a row, we are amazed by the generosity of Western New Yorkers,” said Sabres President Ted Black. “With the holiday season upon us, there is always a critical need at the Buffalo City Mission and the Food Bank of WNY to help the neediest members of our region and the response was tremendous with more than 40,000 pounds of turkey donated. We are grateful to our partners at TOPS and Entercom for helping us get the word out and reminding us what a special community we live in.”

For every 20-pound turkey dropped off, the Sabres gave away two tickets to an upcoming home game. Two drop-off locations were used for the drive: the TOPS Market location on Young Street in Tonawanda and the surface parking lot at First Niagara Center in downtown Buffalo.

Last year’s turkey drive collected more than 1,700 turkeys, yielding approximately 34,000 pounds of turkey.

The Sabres turkey drive was done in conjunction with TOPS Friendly Markets and Entercom Buffalo.
