ENP STAFF REPORTS
news@eastniagarapost.com
The fire at Pizza Oven Monday night was caused by careless smoking, according to a report from the Lockport Fire Department.
The fire at the Vine Street pizzeria started around 7:35 p.m., according to the report. Firefighters were on scene four minutes later and had the fire extinguished by 8:08 p.m.
Fire officials say there was approximately $5,000 damage to the structure and an unknown amount of damage to the building's contents.
According to LFD, 26 fire department personnel responded, six of which were on duty already and 20 of whom were called in from home including two fire investigators and Fire Chief Pat Brady. A pair of trucks -- engines 7 and 8 -- were dispatched to the scene.
The LFD report says that when the department's first platoon arrived, it found smoke "comng from a front corner of the structure, with the employees having all safely evacuated the premises prior to the Fire Department’s arrival."
Firefighters found the fire in the front ground floor corner of the structure and immediately pulled some siding and exterior sheathing off of this area of the building to expose the area where the fire was burning. Firefighters then extinguished the fire with approximately 100 gallons of water. Crews than removed boxes and cartons located on the inside of this area of the structure to check for any further evidence of the fire extending to other parts of the building. With no other evidence of heat or flames found anywhere else inside the building the fire was declared out at 8:08 p.m.
"LFD fire investigators found the cause of the fire to be careless smoking in the area located immediately adjacent to the front corner of the structure where the fire started," the report says.

A fire in the basement of a Church Street home was extinguished by the Lockport Fire Department before it spread to the rest of the home.
According to LFD Chief Pat Brady, firefighters arrived on scene at 93 Church Street at 5:31 p.m., extinguishing the fire and wrapping up by 6:01 p.m.
Seven on-duty firefighters and Chief Brady reported to the scene with Engines 7 and 8, finding smoke coming from the front door area of house. The residents of the home had all safely evacuated
the residence prior to the fire department’s arrival.
Firefighters advanced a hose line in through the front door and then down into the smoke filled basement, where the family’s clothes dryer was found to be in flames. The fire was quickly extinguished with 25 gallons of water. Firefighters checked the rest of the basement to make sure the fire had been contained inside the clothes dryer and had not extended anywhere else inside the residence.
The clothes dryer was removed from the basement and fire department personnel cleared the home of smoke. The clothes dryer, valued at $750, was listed as a total loss with very minor water and smoke damage noted inside the residence.

Twenty-two fire department personnel responded to the blaze including six on-duty, 14 who were called in, MTO/Safety Officer Luca Quagliano and Fire Chief Pat Brady.
The full narrative of the release follows in its entirety:
Lockport Fire Dept. equipment and personnel responded for a report of a fire in a 2- story residential structure located at 415 Washburn St.
The Third Platoon under the direction of Assistant Chief Thomas Lupo responded to the scene with Engines 7 and 8 and also Truck 9 from Fire Headquarters, where they were in the process of cleaning up and resupplying this equipment from the fire that had occurred earlier in the day.RELATED LINK:
On arrival a very large volume of fire was found with the front porch and rear of the structure fully engulfed in flames. Fire was also coming out of some of the first floor windows and could also be seen behind some second floor windows. The homeowner had already safely left the residence prior to the Department’s arrival and stated that only his cat may be left inside the house. A second alarm was again requested to supplement man power at the scene and to provide the needed staffing at Fire Headquarters to answer any other requests for service during this incident. The South Lockport Volunteer Fire Company was also requested to stand by once again in their fire hall.
The flames on the front porch were quickly doused and crews attempted to make an interior attack through the front door to attempt to extinguish the main body of fire inside the residence, while additional hose lines were also pulled to protect the two houses on either side of this heavily involved residence. As conditions continued to deteriorate inside the structure, it eventually became too dangerous to continue operations inside the house and all personnel than exited the structure. With fire found to be in both the walls and also in the attic space, the Department’s aerial ladder was then placed into operation along with several ground ladders. Crews continued to operate and extinguish this large amount of fire into the early morning hours.
This fire was finally completely extinguished at 04:55 AM with tens of thousands of gallons of water used to put the flames out. The structure is a total loss with damage estimated at $60,000 and the contents at $50,000. One minor injury to a firefighter was reported.
The cause of this fire is still under investigation by LFD fire investigators.

Lockport Fire Department and LPD have given an "all clear" on a scene a "suspicious package" was found at 80 Genesee St.
According to LPD, the "small device" was found in one of the building's apartments. It appears to have been there a while, according to LPD officials.
The street was shut down while the incident was under investigation. A bomb squad from Erie County removed the small metal device from the building. A bomb-sniffing dog then went through the building, finding nothing further.
The tenants of the apartment building were evacuated and sheltered at the Salvation Army, however a dog remained in the building. The tenants were allowed to return to their apartments shortly before 7 p.m.

ENP STAFF REPORTS

A fire this morning on Weld Street destroyed a detached garage and its contents, resulting in approximately $75,000 damage according to the Lockport Fire Department.
According to an LFD press release, the fire -- at 33 Weld St. -- started at approximately 8:05 a.m., engulfing the garage. It took 14 firefighters over two hours to completely extinguish the blaze.
"The Third Platoon under the direction of Assistant Chief Lou Farina responded to the scene from fire headquarters. Chief (Pat) Brady and MTO/Safety Officer (Luca) Quagliano also responded immediately to the scene," the press release states.
"On arrival the two-and-a-half-car detached garage that was set back approximately 100 feet from the road was found to be fully involved with fire showing from both the front and rear of the structure. A supply line was laid and while the supply hose was being placed at the hydrant immediately adjacent to the driveway of the residence, crews began an attack of the fire from the front of the structure," The press release continues. "A second hose line was then also deployed to the rear of the structure. A second alarm was requested to supplement man power at the scene and to provide the needed staffing at fire headquarters to answer any other requests for service during this incident."
Those other crew members were needed as a second fire alarm rang out at the same time, calling LFD to a fire in a piece of heavy equipment at Lafarge, 400 Hinman Road. That fire, which caused approximately $5,000 damage, was out upon their arrival. It's believed it may have been caused by an electrical problem on that piece of equipment.
On Weld Street, "crews were able quickly to knock down a large volume of fire at the front of the structure at this time and then began ventilation efforts at windows located on the both sides of the building. A section of the roof at the rear of the structure was found to have already collapsed, hampering attempts to extinguish the contents of the building that were underneath this section of the roof. Firefighters then made access through the garage door and were able to extinguish the main body of fire inside the structure. After extinguishment of the main body of fire, crews continued to search for and extinguish any other small pockets of fire that were found inside the structure. This fire was extinguished by a total of 14 on scene LFD personnel using 5,500 gallons of water and 5 gallons of Class A foam.
The garage contained a car, small tractor, skid steer, and a large assortment of tools and other equipment used by the homeowner for his business venture. All were lost in the blaze.
The cause of this fire is still under investigation by LFD fire investigators.

According to LPD, a bomb threat came in to the county court system by telephone at 1:35 p.m., saying "There's a bomb in the building. Get everyone out."
The building was immediately evacuated.
Bomb sniffing dogs from multiple agencies searched the Hawley Street building. Lockport firefighters checked the cars in the parking lot. Drivers were eventually cleared to retrieve their vehicles but county employees were not permitted to return into the building.
The building has only one public entrance during business hours guarded by a metal detector and armed guards. Some county employees, however, are permitted access to the building without passing through the metal detector.
Police decided to keep the building closed until 5 p.m. -- and essentially closed to the public until Monday -- as a precaution, despite finding no evidence of a bomb.

ENP STAFF REPORTS
news@eastniagarapost.com
A few Saxton Street residents were without power for a short time this morning after a car hit a set of guy wires on Saxton near High Street around 10:15 a.m.
The driver of the vehicle said a carton of eggs slid off her seat as she turned the corner and when she reached for them, she hit the guy wires.
Lockport Police and Fire departments responded, as did NYSEG. The driver was reportedly cited for failure to keep right.
The crash is unrelated to a small power outage currently on Beattie Avenue.

I have often described myself — somewhat in jest — as a crazy gun nut.
I have long believed that the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution entitles "We the People" to the finest of weaponry that money can buy. If the government can have automatic weapons, bazookas and tanks, then by golly, we should be allowed to, too.
This isn't satire. That's not hyperbole. I believe that the Second Amendment is about the only thing that assures that power can be returned to the people when government gets too big for its figurative britches. We're not going to be able to do that with muskets or pointy sticks so we'll need to stay on-par with whatever the armed forces are handing out.
But — and this is where it gets confusing for me — we have a serious gun problem in this country. My heart can't take whatever tragedy is going to happen at a community college, church or movie theatre next month. Too many people have lost their lives these past few years from senseless violence made possible from guns.
We live in a country where in order to get birth control, a woman has to get permission from her insurance company to get permission from her doctor to get permission from her pharmacist to get the birth control. But to get a gun, just show a photo ID and you're good.
We live in a country where to get psychological help, you have to get permission from your insurance company to get permission from your doctor to get a referral to a psychologist. Or shoot someone. You move to the front of the line if you shoot someone.
We live in a country where its harder to vote than to get a gun, where it's harder to get a college diploma than a gun — a high school diploma for that matter. Hell, some might even say it's harder to get a job than a gun. And I'm not talking about illegally obtaining a gun. I'm talking about getting one through legal means.
Of course, the NRA and the radical right will tell you that if you create any sort of gun control, that will only prevent honest people from legally obtaining guns. But all the criminals will still get theirs on the black market. And they're right.
But the same radical right has no problem outlawing abortion and pushing women to back-alley doctors with coat hangers, or outlawing drugs and creating an unregulated black-market drug industry that's currently destroying our youth.
So are laws good? Or bad? I can never tell with the right. Or the left for that matter.
I'll be completely honest with you: I'm flummoxed. I don't know what the solution is. The Second Amendment is good for the country. It's good for the people of this country. But raving lunatics with mommy issues, loner syndrome or blackened hearts having access to those guns is not good for the country.
So what do we do? Honestly, what is the answer?
I think it's time to dig Charlton Heston up and have a serious face-to-face with his cold, dead hand. I think it's time to drop the bravado and sit down and figure out what's really best for this country. Because there's no way anyone can think that another dozen dead college students next month is what's best for this country.
The Andrew Cuomos and Barack Obamas of the world are bound to pounce on Thursday's tragedy and try to make political hay of it. The Wayne LaPierres and Mitch McConnells of the world will say that "guns don't kill people, lunatics do." Or something like that.
So how about a compromise? How about we stop letting lunatics have guns? How about some sort of mental health test before people are allowed to purchase something that blasts a projectile at 1,700 miles per hour?
Sure the lunatics will still be able to get the guns from the black market. Just like every American is capable of breaking every law if they really want to. Just because people speed down Transit Road doesn't mean they should do away with the speed limit, does it? (although they should ... and that's a topic for another day)
I'm not saying ban. I'm saying discussion. A serious one. Starting today. Now, even. Comment on this column to get involved.

As a completely unrelated side note, I'd like to tip my East Niagara Post baseball cap to the men and women on the Lockport Police and Fire departments for the fine work they did Sunday night.
Both departments responded in force to the report of a male who had jumped into the Erie Canal. LPD officers Mike Stover and Toby Trowbridge met and exceeded their job descriptions of protecting and serving when they clung to the male and to the canal's south wall, keeping him afloat for nearly an hour. LFD Chief Pat Brady and crew assisted admirably in the effort, providing lighting, manpower and supplies.
I had an interesting conversation with LPD Chief Larry Eggert the afternoon following the rescue. At the time, he had yet to hear the name of the man he helped save. And during the rescue, he was so focused on what was going on in the canal that he didn't realize there were 100 people watching from the Big Bridge.
To those folks on the Big Bridge who spontaneiously applauded when the young male was pulled into the rescue boat, thank you. You restored some of my faith in humanity. And you probably also made those from LFD and LPD remember — if only for a minute — why they chose the line of work they did.

The rescue mission took LPD and LFD about an hour to perform. |
A person who identifed herself as a friend of the male said he jumped in on his own. She said he was depressed.
Lockport Police and Fire departments assembled en masse behind Aarons rental. Officers Mike Stover and Toby Trowbridge got into the canal near South Transit Street and assisted the male, holding him near the canal's south wall until he could be extracted.
The assembly appeared to attempt different ways of getting the male out of the canal but finally around 8 p.m., a police boat arrived. The male was assisted into the boat and taken away, presumably to the boat launch near the Stevens Street Bridge.
About 100 people gathered on the Big Bridge to watch the rescue effort and most applauded when the police boat arrived.

The City of Lockport has been awarded a SAFER grant in the amount of $212,298, allowing the Lockport Fire Department to call Chris Lane back to service with the city's fire department.
The grant, funded through the Dept. of Homeland Security, will pay Lane's salary, benefits and pension costs for two full years. Lane was originally hired by the department in 2006.
Lockport Mayor Anne McCaffrey said, "This is great news for the City and the Department as it brings an employee back to work, ensures his retention, and maintains the staffing that the Council established last fall during budget time - all at no cost to the city. We could not ask for a better outcome."
McCaffrey thanked Fire Chief Pat Brady for applying for — and being awarded — the grant, as well as Congressman Chris Collins and Senator Chuck Schumer for their help in obtaining the federal funding.

This shed was deemed a total loss. The
church behind it also suffered damages.
|
The shed — valued at $3,000 — was deemed a total loss, while fire officials estimate $5,000 - $8,000 in damage to the exterior siding of the Church of Jesus Christ, to the east of the home at 341 Ontario Street. No one was injured in the blaze, which the fire department had subdued by approximately 3:45 p.m.
Lockport Fire Dept. Training Officer Luca Quagliano told East Niagara Post that the son of the homeowner "admitted to setting off fireworks in the back yard," adding "they assumed that the firework had run its course and that it was out ... and clearly it wasn't."
Quagliano said he believes that the fireworks that were set off were legal, but that "any firework, legal or legal has the potential to be dangerous."
The Niagara County Legislature voted in May to allow sparklers and other novelty items to be sold between June 1 and July 5 each year. They may also be sold during the Christmas/New Years' holiday. Fireworks have been seen for sale at a variety of places around Lockport, including Walmart.
