ENP STAFF REPORTS

New York State residents and visitors can fish for free without a fishing license in any of the state’s 7,500 lakes and ponds and 50,000 miles of rivers and streams during the weekend of June 27-28. Saltwater anglers may also fish in marine waters for migratory marine fish species without enrolling in the Recreational Marine Fishing Registry.
In addition to the June free fishing weekend, legislation signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo now allows for an increase in the number of authorized yearly statewide free fishing days. This year, Veteran’s Day, November 11, has also been designated as a free fishing day.
“New York has some of the best fishing in the nation, and we’re making it easier than ever for people to come out and see all this state has to offer,” Governor Cuomo said. “These free fishing days are the perfect opportunity to cast a line and take in the great outdoors, and I encourage everyone to explore New York’s lakes and waterways this summer.”
Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Joe Martens said, “There’s really no better time to take someone fishing. The weather is warm, the fish are usually cooperative and beginners can give the sport a try while exploring some of our state’s great outdoor resources.”
Those interested in learning more about the sport of fishing are encouraged to attend one of 40 free fishing events held during throughout the summer. A list of these clinics can be found on the Department of Environmental Conservation’s website at www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/27123.html. The public should check back regularly as the list is updated with new events as they are received.
Anglers are reminded that although the requirement for a license and enrolling in the Recreational Marine Fishing Registry has been waived during free fishing weekend, all other regulations remain in effect.
NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative is an effort to improve recreational opportunities for sportsmen and women and to boost tourism activities throughout the state. This includes streamlining fishing and hunting licenses, reducing license fees, improving access for fishing and increasing hunting opportunities in New York State. In support of this initiative, last year $10 million in NY Works funding was dedicated to fish hatchery repairs and 50 new land and water access projects such as boat launches, hunting blinds, trails and parking areas.
Anglers searching for places to fish should visit the Department of Environmental Conservation's fishing page at http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/fishing.html. An interactive map of public fishing locations can also be found on the website.

Famous Lockportians that attendees will have the opportunity to talk to include:

- “Isabella Sutherland” (Marsha Zimmer), of the long-haired, singing family of Sutherland sisters, will share her celebrity life and undying love for her ne’er-do-well husband Frederick Castlemaine. She’ll tell of grave robbers and ghostly happenings around the couple’s shared burial site.
- Artist “Raphael Beck” (Charlie Begley) will describe work on his masterpiece mural, “The Opening of the Erie Canal: October 26, 1825,” whose full-size replica hangs in our Erie Canal Discovery Center. He’ll tell of a lengthy career as an artist and art instructor, with work gracing prominent homes and locations.

ENP STAFF REPORTS
news@eastniagarapost.com
The Bewley Building parking lot is set to play host to a weekly yard sale/flea market this summer.
The "Giant Yard Sale and Flea Market" will begin with a special bonus two day kick-off weekend June 27 and 28 to coincide with the annual Downtown Arts and Crafts show and the start of Lockport’s sesquicentennial celebration week. After that it will take place from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. each Saturday beginning July 4 through Aug. 29.
The market is sponsored by The Niagara Art Trail in cooperation with the Ticklebridge Co-op and Bewley Building Management.
Vendors can rent a full space (two parking spaces) for $20 per week. Half spaces are $12. The kick-off week taking place the last weekend in June will be the same price, but will include both days for the price of one as an added bonus. Organizers expect that many dealers who frequent flea markets will set up, but also encourage individuals to hold their yard sale here as well. Vendors can be open-air, bring a tent, or sell directly out of a car, van, or pick-up. No tents or tables will be provided. Vendors will be allowed to set up beginning at 7 a.m. the day of each market.
Organizers say that the venue is meant for the sale of used items traditionally found at flea markets or home yard sales. Non- flea market type vendors, such as crafters who wish to sell their items are encouraged to sign up for the Craft Show for the June weekend or the Lockport Community Market through the rest of the Summer.
Locatl not-for-profits and civic groups are invited to take turns setting up to promote their organizations free of charge, however space will be limited.
“Our goal is to enhance rather than detract from events which are already taking place in the City, so we do not want to lure vendors away from the existing venues," said Jay Krull, Niagara Art Trail director. "This is strictly flea market/yard sale."
“We have been involved with the Lockport Community Market since its inception in 2011 and we would never want to do anything to hurt the tremendous event which that has become. Being right around the block from Canal Street, we hope to give the folks who come down each week an additional shopping experience.”
There is no admission charge for shoppers.
For more information, email info@niagaraarttrail.com or call Krull at 609-0433.
