The Hospice Gran Fondo route map. (CONTIBUTED - click to enlarge)
Niagara Hospice is bringing a popular European event to the Niagara Wine Trail on Saturday.

The Gran Fondo bike ride is a type of bike ride that originated in Italy and is becoming more popular in the United States. A Gran Fondo is a "Big Ride," also known as a "party on wheels."

The Gran Fondo is not a race, it is a ride through Niagara County beginning and ending at Chateau Niagara Winery in Newfane. There are refreshment stations at Niagara County wineries including Honeymoon Trail Winery, Midnight Run Winery, Victorianbourg Wine Estate, Schulze Vineyards & Winery, and Black Willow Winery.

Riders have four different routes to choose from, ranging in size from 5 miles to 62.5 miles. The 62.5-mile route begins at 8 a.m., a 30-mile route starts at 9 a.m., a 15-mile route starts at 10 a.m., and the 5-mile route starts at 10:15 a.m.

Day-of event registration is available for $45, but Hospice hopes that riders would raise funds from friends and family and contribute more to benefit Hospice. Registration is available online.

Each rider will receive admission to a pre-race party; a custom 2014 Dri-Fit Hospice Gran Fondo bicycling shirt; a Mighty Niagara Discount Card, good until September 2014; refreshments at designated route pit stops; and a post-race party complete with live music, assorted food, water, Starbucks coffee, and beer from Woodcock Brothers Brewery in Wilson.

East Niagara Post now publishes garage and yard sales.
