YMCA Camp Kenan is offering two critical thinking and creativity workshops this fall at the Lockport Family YMCA.

The "Nature is Art!" and "LEGO Build It!" programs will run during both the Fall 1 (Sept. 14 – Oct. 31) and Fall 2 (Nov 2. – Dec. 19) sessions.

The "Nature is Art!" workshop is a hands-on, full participation class where youth will create various art projects using natural and/or traditional materials for nature projects while learning, creating, exploring, and playing together. These classes are designed to help youth develop and express creativity through artistic endeavors.

Each week will feature a different project designed and facilitated by trained staff members. Sessions are divided by age group:  “Sprouts” (6-8 years old), “Buds” (9-11 years old), and “Flowers” (12-14 years old). Each section has a maximum enrollment of 12 with classes running for 45 minutes on Monday and Wednesdays, starting at 5:30 p.m. For Lockport Family YMCA members, cost is $24. For program-only members it is $48.

The "LEGO Build It!" program is a hands-on, full participation class where youth will build and design with LEGO bricks to develop problem solving and critical thinking skills while learning, creating, exploring, and playing together. It helps to develop hand-eye coordination, creativity, tactile responses, and more. Each builder will also receive a mini LEGO set to take home with them.

The focus of these workshops is on pre-engineering and STEM fundamentals with two sections available during each session: the Junior Builders (ages 6-8 years old) and the Builders (ages 9-11 years old). Each section has a maximum enrollment of 12. Classes run for 45 minutes on Tuesday and Thursday nights, starting at 6 p.m. For Lockport Family YMCA members, cost is $20, $40 for program members.

For additional information on these programs or to register, visit www.LockportYMCA.com or call the Camp Kenan Director, Luke Kantor, at 622-8484.

BARKER — YMCA Camp Kenan and the Olcott Yacht Club Junior Sailing program are teaming up to provide sailing programming for the campers at YMCA Camp Kenan.

Luke Kantor, director of YMCA Camp Kenan, and Jourdan Morgan, director of Sailing Programs for Olcott Yacht Club Junior Sailing, have been working together to provide new opportunities for their respective campers throughout the summer. At least three times throughout the summer of 2015, the Junior Sailing fleet consisting of 10 sail boats (420s) will be sailing from Olcott Harbor to YMCA Camp Kenan. The Junior Sailing instructors and campers will then provide the sailing experience for an afternoon to the campers ages 9-17.

On July 21, August 4, and August 18, thanks to the OYC Junior Sailing program, YMCA Camp Kenan will be able to offer sailing for the first time ever to their campers. The Junior Sailors will also get the opportunity to experience some of the programming offered by YMCA Camp Kenan such as rock climbing, archery, and more.

“We are excited to be able to now offer sailing to our campers at YMCA Camp Kenan. It will be a great addition to our programming. Working together to benefit both of our program’ participants is exciting,” says Kantor.

The Olcott Yacht Club Junior Sailing began in the 1940s and offers several levels of instruction taught with an emphasis on safety, fun, sportsmanship, cooperation, and competition.  All classes are taught by US Sailing and American Red Cross certified instructors. “Our sailing club uses the US Sailing Association format that offers several years of developmental skills in sailing, theory, timing, balance, racing and seamanship. I think this partnership will grow and we are also looking forward to having our sailors participate in these new camp activities too,” says Morgan. Classes are kept small with a student/teacher ratio of less than 10:1.

Acceptance into the program is on a first come/first served basis and is open to the public and membership, ages 7 to 18. The Junior Sailing program offers four two-week sessions throughout the summer.

For more information or to register for the Olcott Yacht Club Junior Sailing program, visit their website: olcottyacht.club/junior-sailing or call the Olcott Yacht Club at 778-5915. Swimming at Olcott Beach and Camp Kenan Beach are both currently off limits, according to the Niagara County Health Department.

While the beach at Olcott is open, the waters are not. Beaches are posted unsafe to swim or closed for a variety of reasons including when water tests show unacceptable levels of E. Coli bacteria present, there is floating debris, oil, excessive weed growth, bad odors and general turbidity.

Swimming in these waters could cause infections of the ear, eye, nose throat and skin as well as cause diarrhea if the water is ingested, according to the Health Department's website.

The Niagara County Department of Health test beaches and bathing areas within Niagara County weekly throughout the summer to determine if the water quality can cause a health risk.

up with items for the needy. (ENP STAFF PHOTO)
The Lockport Family YMCA and Camp Kenan have begun an effort to ensure that all in East Niagara are warm.

All items can be dropped off at the Lockport Family YMCA, 19 East Ave. or YMCA Camp Kenan at 8571 Lower Lake Road, Barker.

Once the tree is filled, items will be donated to local community missions and area charities (on Dec. 23) for the most impact.

Grief camp camper becomes volunteer

ENP STAFF REPORTS
news@eastniagarapost.com

At left, Camp Hope camper Samantha Tremko works on an art project in
2002. At right, an adult Tremko reminisces with her 2002 Camp Hope
yearbook. (CONTRIBUTED PHOTO)
Samantha Tremko lost her mom suddenly when she was just seven years old. Her family was just settling down from a family vacation in Florida, making the long drive home to North Tonawanda. After dropping grandparents off at their home, Samantha’s mom Robin suffered a blood clot to the heart. Her whole world suddenly changed.

A year following her loss, Samantha’s father Robert Tremko told her she was going to Camp Hope. When the day came to leave for camp in the summer of 2002 she didn’t want to go – she didn’t want to leave her father. Three days later, Samantha didn’t want to leave Camp Hope. Tremko says she enjoyed every aspect of the Camp Hope experience and that it helped her then, and continues to help — 12 years later.

“It’s helpful for children who have lost a loved one through death to have an outlet that enables them to express their grief,” states Camp Hope Director Lori Pusateri. “Whether it’s the death of a parent, grandparent, sibling or a special friend, dealing with the loss is beyond the experience of most children and their reaction is often overlooked in the activity surrounding the death. It’s natural for family members to want to protect their children from hurting and may feel that talking about the loss might worsen their grief.”

Niagara Hospice is offering its 14th Camp Hope for grieving children June 27-29 at the YMCA’s Camp Kenan in Barker. Children ages 7 to 13 throughout Western New York who have lost a loved one through death – whether or not they ever received hospice care – are invited to attend the free camp.

During the camp weekend, children learn to express their grief through many activities such as creative movement therapy, musical expression, arts and crafts, pet visits, and a memorial bonfire. Outdoor recreation like rock wall climbing, making and eating S’mores around the campfire, swimming and nature walks are also enjoyed. Camp Hope is staffed by professional counselors, trained volunteers and a nurse who is on hand for the entire weekend.

Samantha Tremko is now a 20-year-old Niagara University student studying social work.

“Camp Hope inspired me to seek a career in grief counseling,” she said. “When I attended camp 12 years ago, I learned that I was not alone; that there is a support system for me and for the other kids I met who were grieving like me.”

So inspired by Camp Hope, Tremko has registered to be a volunteer for this year’s camp, saying: “I’m really excited to volunteer and be able to return what I’ve received from Camp Hope. The experience was life-changing and if I can now change just one person’s life, it will be one of the most rewarding things I can do as I pursue a career in grief counseling.”

For a free camp application, call the Niagara Hospice bereavement department at 280-0777 or visit them online for printable forms. Applications must be received by June 17.

Applications are also available online for men and women interested in volunteering for the camp weekend – whether it’s for a few hours or for the whole weekend. Training for camp volunteers is May 31. Call 280-0777 for more information and to register.

Camp Hope is free and entirely funded by local service clubs, organizations, individuals and grants, including the Middle Chamber Society, Lockport City Fire Fighters Ball, Optimist International, Micro Graphics, UB Family Medicine and Wegman’s Supermarket on Military Road. Anyone wishing to sponsor a camper is asked to contact the Niagara Hospice Alliance development office at 439-4417.
