S.E.R.V. Niagara has teamed up with the Resource Training Center of Amherst to offer a unique scholarship for veterans of the United States armed forces.

Through the Gary L. Valeri Scholarship Program, veterans will be trained to work as Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselors (CASAC). The scholarship is named after the former husband of S.E.R.V. Niagara’s Founder, who lost his long battle with addiction.

The training program, offered two nights per week over an 11-month period, will qualify veterans to work with other veterans in a wide variety of settings such as clinics, hospitals, veterans facilities, halfway houses and the court system.

Veterans interested in the scholarship program are asked to send a letter of interest to S.E.R.V. Niagara, 80 Park Ave., 2nd Floor, Lockport, N.Y. 14094, by May 1. Within that letter, applicants should answer three questions:

  1. What are your reasons for wanting to become a counselor?
  2. What are three positive qualities/characteristics that you possess that will benefit you as a counselor?
  3. What do you see yourself doing once you have completed the program?
Veterans of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

“There are not enough veterans in these types of counseling roles,” according to Jennifer D’Andrea-Terreri, founder of S.E.R.V Niagara. “Veterans in treatment have a greater chance of successful recovery when receiving therapy and treatment from another veteran. This is especially so when dealing with combat veterans. War and other related events are main causes of post-traumatic stress disorder and substance abuse, so it only makes sense for our veterans to receive help from other veterans who can better relate to their issues.”

The mission of S.E.R.V. Niagara is to promote healing and support and encourage every human being to reach their full potential while helping to restore hope and respect in our youth, families and communities. The organization’s long-term goal is to provide permanent housing and support to veterans and their families.

“There is a strong need for professionally trained counselors in today's society,” said Monica Farrar, director of The Resource Training Center. “There will always be a need for counselors as a growing number of people struggle with addiction.”

For more information on the scholarship program, please call The Resource Training Center at 983-2258 or email info@wnyresourcetraining.org.

The Resource Training Center is conveniently located in the Harlem Road Community Center at 4255 Harlem Road, Amherst. For more information regarding their services, please visit www.wnyresourcetraining.org.

When an 18-year-old Emily Lane resident happened across a red and white dirt bike lying in a ditch on the east side of East Canal Road in Pendleton last Friday, he took note. When he saw it was still there on Tuesday, he took a friend.

Together with his friend, the Town of Lockport teenager got the bike up out of the mud and brought it back to his Emily Lane home — and called the Niagara County Sheriff's Office to report that he'd found the bike.

When patrol arrived on Emily Lane the dirt bike was in the garage covered in mud. The teenager told patrol that when he pulled it out of the ditch, it was submerged in mud and water — but it was in working order.

Patrol located the VIN number on the dirt bike and discovered that it was a 2007 Honda which was registered to an Amherst woman. The Honda did not show in their database as having been stolen, so patrol called the owner of record. The Amherst woman stated that the Honda was indeed stolen and that she had reported it the Amherst Police Department in July of 2013.

Patrol contacted Amherst P.D. and confirmed the woman's statements. Amherst Police informed NCSO that the suspects in the case were in custody and the Honda could be returned to its owner. Amherst Police then called the owner who responded to Emily Lane to retrieve her Honda.

A North Tonawanda man and woman were charged with petit larceny and other charges Tuesday morning after being accused of stealing books from the Barnes & Noble store at Niagara County Community College.

Lisa Maria Coleman, 33, and Ryan J. Lasky, 34, both of 341 Goundry St. in North Tonawanda, were accused of collaborating to steal two books valued at $346.90 from the store. Lasky allegedly fled with the books while Coleman was detained by store personnel who called the Niagara County Sheriff's Office.

According to the NCSO report, when patrol arrived, Coleman gave them false information about her her male counterpart was, leading them to look for the wrong person for about an hour. Eventually, she came clean and said it was Ryan Lasky, her boyfriend. She told patrol that she didn't want to get him in trouble, which is why she had given them another name.

Patrol found that Coleman's car was illegally parked in a handicapped parking spot and that she had a bench warrant issued from the Town of Amherst.

Coleman told patrol "that she and her boyfriend had a severe drug problem and would steal the text book and take them to "Bucks for Books" to obtain cash for them," the report said. "Coleman stated that they would then use the money for drugs."

Patrol contacted Lasky by phone and he came to the scene — without the books, which he said he put under Coleman's vehicle. A search of Lasky revealed him to be in possession of two separate controlled substances.

Coleman's vehicle was towed. Coleman and Lasky were both charged with petit larceny and sixth-degree conspiracy by Niagara County Sheriff's deputies. Coleman was also charged with obstruction of governmental administration. Lasky was also charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. Coleman was taken to Niagara County Jail and held on $500 bail. The Town of Amherst also fexed over a detainer on her arrest warrant. Lasky was brought to Niagara Jail as well, as was to have been in Town of Cambria Court Tuesday night. The controlled substance were submitted to the Niagara County forensic lab for analysis and evidence.
