TOWN OF TONAWANDA — The investigation into the boating accident on Ellicott Creek that claimed the life of a 16-year-old Lockport girl is ongoing according to Town of Tonawanda Police.
Avery L. Gardner of Lockport died after she hit her head on an abutment from a pedestrian bridge over Ellicott Creek Thursday morning.
Town of Tonawanda Police say they have received assistance from the Erie County Sherriff’s Department Marine Unit and the New York State Police.
The names of the boat's other two passengers are still not being released.
"Speed of the boat and alcohol and not ruled out as possible contributing factors," according to a press release from Town of Tonawanda PD. "We are still talking to witnesses and processing physical evidence."
Police have been in communication with the Erie County District Attorney’s Office regarding any charges that may occur, but advise that "it is not likely that a decision about charges will happen today."
An online fund drive was created Thursday evening to raise money for Gardner's funeral costs. The gofundme.com drive us up to $1,255 as of 1 p.m. — with a goal of $5,000.

Olcott Fire Marine Rescue fished a man and a woman out of
the water. Then went back for their boat.
|
According to local photographer Joe Derda, who was able to capture some pictures of the rescue, a call for Olcott Fire Department came in for two people in the water at approximately 12:45 p.m. They were safely rescued from their capsized 16-foot sailboat at 1:30 p.m.
After attempts by Olcott Fire Marine Rescue to right the boat and bring it to shore, the rescue team brought the two — one man and one women — to a waiting ambulance at the marina. The pair were cold and wet but uninjured.
The U.S. Coast Guard followed up to bring the capsized boat in but abandoned the effort. Olcott Fire Marine Rescue was called out again as the capsized boat was drifting into harbor traffic.
