TOWN OF TONAWANDA — A 16-year-old Lockport girl died from a head injury this morning following a boating accident on Ellicott Creek.
The accident reportedly happened around 6:45 a.m. when the girl stood up while the motorboat was moving westbound, hitting her head on a pedestrian bridge at Thistle Avenue, just a couple hundred yards from Niagara Falls Boulevard, according to the Town of Tonawanda Police Department Captain Joseph Carosi.
After the victim hit her head, the two other passengers in the boat flagged down people on the nearby road for help and ran the boat ashore.
Police had reportedly asked witnesses if they found alcohol containers nearby, but Carosi declined to comment on whether alcohol was a factor in the accident, saying simply, "the investigation is ongoing."
