The Niagara Hotel was still hopping after the ball dropped on 2016. (PHOTOS BY SCOTT LEFFLER / ENP STAFF)

pair each work at local bars but found themselves off for the evening to enjoy
the festivities.
East Niagara bars and eateries rang in the new year with large crowds again Thursday night and this morning. Downtown was packed with people, many of whom made their way from establishment to establishment wishing "Happy New Year" to friends and random strangers.

Lockport's newest bar, the Penalty Box, was filled with happy patrons at midnight. It was also busy earlier in the evening, according to owner Jon George.  Lock 34 was packed as always shortly after midnight. It was truly standing room only. The Niagara Hotel had the same good fortune with people lined up along the bar and standing two-deep drinking and catching up with friends.

Penalty Box owner Jon George, center, enjoys conversation
with patrons of the bar shortly after midnight.
The Ski Lodge on Trowbridge Street put out a spread for those ringing in the new year there, as well as music for attendees. Whether it was the food, the music or the decent weather, the bar was still full long after midnight. The Pleasant Valley Tavern offered live music heading up to midnight and was still quite full shortly before 2 a.m.

Gonzo's on Main Street had the all-night liquor license this year and was so full at 2:30 a.m. that a line of thirsty patrons had to wait for people to leave before they were allowed entry into the bar. Around 3:30 a.m., the line had cleared up, but the bar was still full of people ringing in 2016 with a pint and friends.

Earlier in the evening, Cornerstone CFCU Arena offered a public skating session from 8 - 10 p.m.

There's more photos from New Year's Eve in Lockport here.

Patrons were shoulder-to-shoulder at Gonzos after 2 a.m. The Main Street bar had an all-night license.

A 28-year-old Niagara Street man was charged with assault, harassment and other crimes early Saturday morning at a Main Street bar.

According to the LPD arrest report, Damien D. Speck, 407 Niagara St., Side Apt., was asked to leave Lock 34 and punched two staff members while he was being escorted from the bar.

When police arrived and put Speck in custody, he “began to slam his face against the rear of patrol car 26,” according to the arrest report. In doing so, he cracked one of the windows of the car. Once he was placed inside the car, he “began kicking and thrashing in the back of the car.”

“The suspect was kicking the doors with his feet and throwing his body against the seat and the divider,” the report said. “The suspect’s actions then caused the rear window to break completely,” causing about $300 damage and causing the arresting officer to get a cut on his left upper arm while removing Speck from the vehicle.

He was transferred to another patrol car and taken to LPD, where he was given medical treatment from Twin Cities Ambulance and then taken to Eastern Niagara Hospital-Lockport.

Speck is due in City Court Monday morning on charges of third-degree criminal mischief, third-degree assault, second-degree obstruction of governmental administration, resisting arrest, and two counts of second-degree harassment.

The Lockport Express has some off-ice festivities planned for this weekend in addition to their best-of-three on-ice series against the Wilkes-Barre Miners.

The team will hold pre- and post-game parties at Lock 34 Friday and Saturday — open to the public. They will also present a check from funds raised at their charity game to 2014 Gold Winning U.S. Sled Hockey Player Adam Page during a ceremony prior to Friday's game.

The best-of-three series will have the Express taking on the Miners at 7 p.m. Friday, 6 p.m. Saturday, and (if necessary) 1 p.m. Sunday. All three games will take place at Cornerstone CFCU Arena. Admission for each game is $5 for adults and free for children under 12.

The Express placed second in the NA3EHL's Western Division. The Miners placed third. The winner of the series will face the winner of the Jersey Shore Wildcats / Roc City Royals series, to be played this weekend in New Jersey.

Jersey Shore lost only one game this season — to the hands of the Express. While Jersey Shore may have led the league in wins, it was the Express that led the league in attendance — in only their first year.

“This has been a tremendous kickoff season for the Express,” said Express Head Coach Frank Vecchio.  “Our boys came together as a team and the hometown fans have given us the boost we needed to win in a very competitive league.”

The pre- and post-game parties at Lock 34 were planned by the team as a means of thanking the fans for their support. They will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday — and immediately following the game; and from 2-6 p.m. Saturday — and immediately following the game. Saturday's afternoon party will also feature music from Darrell Porter at 3 p.m. Drink specials are available to everyone who brings a game ticket to the pre- and post-game parties.

As for the on-ice activities? “This is going to be a very competitive series with Wilkes-Barre," Vecchio said. "They’ve been right on our heels all season long, so I’m expecting a tough matchup. Fans will once again be treated to first-class hockey in a great rink setting.”

Lock 71 Trading is sponsoring a sign contest for the games throughout the weekend.

Lockport could potentially have one more home series this season. If the Express wins against the Miners and Roc City defeats New Jersey, the Royals would travel to Lockport for the second round of the playoffs.

Bar owners are soccer fans — at least this week.

The United States team advanced to the second round of the Fifa World Cup this afternoon, despite losing to Germany 1-0. That means more business for area bars that have been showing the games.

Chris Knapp, manager of Lock 34 said there's been a noticeable increase in business during the games. The Main Street bar was full of patrons during the game this afternoon, many taking their lunch break during the game and others just there to watch soccer on three big-screen TVs, including a 90-inch one.

"The longer the U.S. stays in it, the better for us," Knapp said.

Knapp said the business was even busier for Sunday's 2-2 tie against Portugal.

While the Niagara Hotel didn't have the crowd that Lock 34 did, those there were watching the game with interest, hoping for a win by the American team.

Fitzgerald's on Ohio Street felt a positive impact from the game, as well, according to one employee.

"We had a few people here today to watch the game," she said.

Jodi Newton of the Pleasant Valley Tavern said patrons at the Lowertown bar stuck around just to watch more of the game.

Some bars missed out on today's soccer crowd due to the early start of the game — noon on a weekday. And at least one said there was no noticeable change in business, that being Scruples in Newfane.

According to Nielson ratings, games so far have attracted record television viewership, including an average of 24.7 million for Sunday’s game against Portugal.

Even President Barack Obama seems to have World Cup fever. He reportedly watched today’s game aboard Air Force One.

Tickets are still available for tonight's "International Warfare," the World Kickboxing Association bout between Lockport's Amer Abdallah and the UK's James Wallis.

Ed Rodger, left, and Andre Carroll had words Friday night
at the weigh-in for their bout tonight.
The pair faced off Friday night at Lock 34 for official weigh-ins for tonight's fight, find a bit of controversy when Wallis weighed in at 195 for the Cruiserweight bout, six pounds over the upper limit. Abdallah's weight of 184 was well within the guidelines.

After a brief discussion, the pair came to terms and decided to continue with tonight's main event, to be held at the Kenan Center Arena.

The card also includes Lockport's Joe "Son of a Legend" Taylor, Luay “Arabian Nightmare” Ashkar, Kendrick Huston, Eric Pulmeri, Andre Carroll, Lockport High School senior Tyler Rodier, Sweet Home junior Brandon Freiburger, Ed Rodgers, Dylan Sullivan, and women’s kickboxer, Damiana Andrello of Syracuse.

The weight controversy wasn't the only row Friday night as Rodgers and Carroll had words after their official weigh-ins. The pair of heavyweights have a pronounced dislike for one another.

Tickets for the “International Warfare” event, presented by Lace Up Promotions, are available on ticketfly.com. General admission seating is $25. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the opening bell at 7.

Joe "Son of  a Legend" Taylor will be one of the featured fighters at "International Warfare," tonight at the Kenan Center Arena.
