Sailors enjoy a beautiful day on the water at the 2015 Jack Beatty Memorial
Hospice Cruise and Clambake. This year’s event is scheduled for July 15
at The Youngstown Yacht Club. (CONTRIBUTED PHOTO)
The 17th Annual Jack Beatty Memorial Hospice Cruise and Clambake is scheduled for July 15 at the historic Youngstown Yacht Club, rain or shine.

Members of the Youngstown Yacht Club along with other skippers from around WNY will once again generously donate their boats and time to take cruise participants for an afternoon sail up the Niagara River.

During the sail, participants will enjoy snacks and drinks provided by boat owners along with live music by The Junkyard Dogs, who will play on the river for passengers sailing by. After the sail, the fun continues with a clambake and buffet with all the trimmings, featuring live music by Soul Committee. The evening continues with a silent auction with gifts donated by local businesses and community members.

With a sellout record of 39 boats and 238 participants, the event raised a record of $42,000 in 2015.

Co-Chair Adam Burns said, “This is a terrific event and we are so thankful to the numerous businesses and everyone in the community who make it such a great success year after year. We are looking forward to another great year in 2016. It is such a great time for a very worthy cause.”

Due to the record number of attendees in 2015, organizers anticipate the cruise portion of the event to sell out for the third year in a row. Party-goers are encouraged to sign up early so they don’t miss the boat.

Tickets are also available for just the clambake and cookout portion of the event that begins around 5:30 p.m. Details and online registration can be found at www.niagarahospiceregatta.com.

To volunteer, sponsor, place an ad, donate items or get more information for the event, contact Adam Burns at adamburns05@yahoo.com or Niagara Hospice Advancement Coordinator Maureen Rizzo at mrizzo@niagarahospice.com. Rizzo can also be reached at 280-0728.

TOWN OF LOCKPORT -- The Niagara County Sheriff's Office responded to a complaint in late November from M&T bank about a matter of a missing $2,000.

According to the NCSO report, the bank had mistaken given a Youngstown man $2,000 too much. And the bank wanted it back.

The report says that the man had cashed a check for $2,810 on Nov. 19 at the bank, 5737 South Transit Road. He gave the teller $200 cash along with the check and requested his $3,000 in strapped bills. The teller gave the man three packages of strapped bills, believing that each package contained 10 $100 bills. However, it turned out that two of them had 20 bills them, which the bank discovered at the close of business.

The bank called the man to ask him to return the extra money, but the man hung up the phone. That's when NCSO got involved. When they contacted the man, their call was instead returned by his lawyer who states that his client's alleged actions would be a civil matter -- not a criminal one.

The lawyer stated that he would contact the bank. NCSO, in return, is gathering evidence for a potential charge of fourth-degree grand larceny. As of the report being filed, however, no warrant was obtained.

The Niagara USA Chamber is publicly opposing a plan by the International Joint Commission to regulate water levels on Lake Ontario, saying the adoption of the plan would harm the tourism industry in Niagara County.

The organization is hosting a roundtable discussion on the IJC plan with Congressman Chris Collins, elected officials from Niagara, Orleans and Monroe counties, business leaders and tourism experts. They will ask attendees of the roundtable to sign a petition urging Gov. Andrew Cuomo to veto the legislation implementing the plan.

The roundtable will be held at 9 a.m. Sept. 15 at Old Fort Niagara in Youngstown. It is free and open to the public, but space is limited to reservations are suggested by calling 285-9142.

The Chamber released a memorandum of opposition to the plan late last week. It follows in its entirety:
The Niagara USA Chamber, Niagara County’s leading business advocacy organization, opposes the International Joint Commission’s (IJC) adoption of Plan 2014, which would regulate water levels on Lake Ontario.

The negative effect to the tourism industry, commercial fishing, boaters and residents within the impacted communities comes at a time when these communities are trying to recover from the economic depression felt throughout the country in recent years.

The IJC itself acknowledged the impacts of Plan 2014, noting at least a 13 percent rise in the costs felt by property owners, municipalities and businesses along the shoreline for such things as erosion damage and maintenance or replacement of structures such as seawalls and breakwaters.

“This plan strikes at the heart of these communities and the IJC has offered no solutions to offset the negative economic impact,” stated Deanna Alterio Brennen, President and CEO of the Niagara USA Chamber.

Also at issue is the science behind this decision.  Both the National Research Council and the Royal Society of Canada have stated that the study used by the IJC to reach their decision is inadequate for use as basis for reaching their conclusion.  While the IJC has responded that these issues have been addressed, including the recommendation that an adaptive management strategy be developed to address future uncertainties, questions still remain.

“The Federal Government must recognize the immediate and long term negative effects this plan will have.  If there are still uncertainties or questions regarding this plan then it should not be enacted,” stated Anthony McKenna, the Chamber’s Legislative Committee Chairman.  “While we need to respect the need for good environmental policies, this is not one of them.”

YOUNGSTOWN — A suspicious bag containing bones was found Monday floating in the waters of Lake Ontario near Fort Niagara.

The bag was retrieved by the Niagara County Sheriff's Marine Patrol Unit after the unit had been flagged down by another boat.

The investigation has been turned over to the Niagara County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Bureau.

This is the second incident of bones found on or near the Lake Ontario shore in the past week. On Tuesday, NCSO was called to a Lockport address to speak to a woman who said she found a pair of bones at Golden Hill State Park in Somerset the day prior.

The woman told patrol that she took one of the bones home and posted a picture of it to Facebook. After being told by one of her friends that it was a human bone, she called NCSO, who concluded that the bone was not human.

YOUNGSTOWN — A pair of men with French accents pulled a knife on a boat captain after picking up a charter in Queenston, Ontario, forcing the captain to bring the men to the shores of Fort Niagara.

A press release from the Niagara County Sheriff's Office says NCSO is investigating the matter with assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection, Department of Homeland Security Investigative Division, New York State Park Police and the Niagara Regional Police.

According to NCSO, a 16-foot charter vessel picked the pair up at about 11:30 a.m. in Queenston under the pretense of a fishing trip on Lake Ontario. After being on the water for approximately two hours, the charter boat captain was ordered at knifepoint to take them to shore in the United States. The men were then taken to shore just east of Fort Niagara where they fled the scene on foot.

The men were described as in their mid 20s with one being 6-feet tall and 175 pounds wearing a blue coat and a white Eskimo hat. The other male was described as 5-feet, 11-inches tall and 200 pounds wearing a black sweater, black track pants and white Nike sneakers. Both men were described as having French accents.

Anyone with information regarding the incident can call the Niagara County Sheriff's Office dispatch at 438-3394 or the Criminal Investigation Bureau at 438-3327.

A Youngstown firefighter who died last year was honored this morning in a ceremony to commemorate fallen firefighters.

Thomas J. Burley, a volunteer with the Youngstown Vol. Fire Co., died on June 18, 2013 in a motorcycle crash in Cambria. The 20-year-old had been with the department for five years. He was also a security police officer with the New York National Guard’s 107th Air Wing in Niagara Falls.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo led the commemoration of the 17th Annual Fallen Firefighters Memorial Ceremony by issuing two proclamations honoring the State’s career and volunteer firefighters.

The proclamations mark Oct. 7 as the annual Firefighter Appreciation Day, and Oct. 5-11 as New York’s annual Fire Prevention Week. During today’s Fallen Firefighters Memorial Ceremony in Albany, nine brave individuals were added to the Memorial.

“Today we honor New York firefighters who time and time again put their lives on the line to help their neighbors and keep their communities safe,” Gov. Cuomo said. “We also honor the memory of nine selfless individuals from across this state who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty. Their names will never be forgotten and will forever be in our thoughts and prayers.”

Lieutenant Gov. Robert J. Duffy said, “These extraordinarily brave individuals made the ultimate sacrifice protecting our state, and this dedication both remembers these fallen heroes and extends our appreciation to those that selflessly serve each day. Today we honor these firefighters who kept New Yorkers out of harm’s way as well as their families who were there for them every step of the way. Their bravery will never be forgotten, and New York State is eternally grateful for their fearless commitment to safety and service.”

Including the nine fallen firefighters whose names were added to the Fallen Firefighter Memorial today, there are now the names of 2,390 firefighters who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. In addition to Burley, those honored included:

  • John M. Janos, Firefighter, Binghamton Fire Department, Broome County, April 6, 2013
  • Matthew J. Porcari, Captain, Owego Fire Department, Tioga County, January 22, 2013
  • Timothy J. Lamere, Assistant Chief, Constable Fire Department, Franklin County, August 21, 2012
  • Antonio C. Rodriques, Firefighter, Yonkers Fire Department, Westchester County, July 31, 2012
  • Joseph P. DiBernardo, Lieutenant, New York City Fire Department, Bronx County, November 22, 2011
  • Michael D. Sowich, Firefighter, New Hartford Fire Department, Oneida County, March 2, 2007
  • Bernard E. Bauman, Firefighter, Laurelton Fire Department, Monroe County, August 27, 1952
  • Arthur E. Sink, Firefighter, Laurelton Fire Department, Monroe County, August 27, 1952

The Fallen Firefighter Memorial, dedicated in 1998, honors the memory and the valor of our fallen firefighters commemorated at the Memorial during Fire Prevention Week each year, as well as pays tribute to the over 100,000 New York State firefighters who put their lives on the line every day. Fire Departments statewide respond to approximately 1.8 million incidents each year, which represents approximately 5,100 incidents daily, 215 incidents per hour, and four incidents a minute.

TOWN OF LOCKPORT — A Lake Road, Youngstown woman told Niagara County Sheriff's deputies that Saturday morning a man claiming to be "a police officer" scolded her for not getting out of his way on South Transit Road.

The woman said she was driving south on South Transit Road around 8:30 a.m. when she noticed a gold colored, four-door sedan tailgating her. She then moved from the inside lane to the outside lane to allow the vehicle to pass. The woman said that the vehicle drove even with her and made "gestures" to her.

When she pulled into the NOCO parking lot on South Transit Road, the gold vehicle followed her. A man, who appeared to be in his 50s with gray hair, medium build and wearing glasses, exited his vehicle and began yelling at her, according to the report filed with NCSO.  The man identified himself as a police officer and advised her that she needs to move for emergency vehicles. The unknown man did not give a name of his own, nor an agency name, but only addressed himself as a police officer, however, the gold vehicle did not have any emergency lights or emergency sirens. The man continued to yell at her and stated that he was calling back up.

The woman told patrol that she went into the store and when she came out, the man had blocked in her vehicle. After a few minutes, the man left in an unknown direction.

Patrol will follow up with the manager of NOCO in an attempt to obtain possible security video of the incident.

John Supple
The multi-agency search for a Lewiston man who went missing in his boat in Lake Ontario on Wednesday was called off by the U.S. Coast Guard late Friday night.

John Supple, 60, launched out of Wilson Tuscarora State Park and was last seen at approximately 3 p.m. Wednesday northeast of the Wilson pier operating a 16 foot Starcraft boat, camouflage in color.

The search effort had intensified Friday morning, with more agencies being called to assist in the search. Specifically, assistance had been requested of the Barker, Cambria, Hartland, Miller Hose, Ransomville, South Wilson, Wrights Corners, and Youngstown fire companies. The Wilson and Olcott fire companies were already assisting the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Coast Guard, NYS Park Police and Canadian Authorities with the search.

Friday night, however, U.S. Coast Guard Cmdr. Joseph Higgins released a statement:
“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and friends. The decision to suspend a search takes extreme consideration and is one of the most difficult decisions a Coast Guardsman is ever faced with.”
Anyone with information about the missing boater is asked to call the Coast Guard at 843-9527 or the Niagara County Sheriff's Office at 438-3393.

Whether you love to sail, or like to keep your feet on solid ground, the 15th Annual Jack Beatty Memorial Hospice Cruise and Clambake has something for everyone. The Cruise and Clambake is scheduled for July 11 at the historic Youngstown Yacht Club rain or shine. Members of the Yacht Club, along with other skippers from around WNY, will once again generously donate their boats and time to take cruise participants for a wonderful afternoon sail up the Niagara River.
