ENP STAFF REPORTS
news@eastniagarapost.com
The popular adage is that "you can't fight City Hall," but East Niagara Post co-publishers Heather Grimmer and Scott Leffler hope to prove that adage wrong.
The heads of the online news organization challenged Mayor Anne McCaffrey and the Common Council to a kickball game as part of the city's 150th birthday celebration. McCaffrey accepted the challenge today on behalf of the Council and other city employees.
The game will be played at 7 p.m. July 1 at Outwater Park, featuring ENP's co-publishers and contributors — and maybe a couple ringers — against city officials and employees. Each team is to have 12 members to allow for rest periods for some of the (older) players. Team City Hall may be particularly tired after a tug-of-war against the Town of Lockport on June 30 and a Common Council meeting earlier in the evening of July 1.
While the primary purpose of the game is to have fun, ENP is hoping that it can also raise money and food for charity. Team ENP will make a $125 donation to Saint John's Food Pantry and issued a challenge to Team City Hall to make a similar contribution to a local charity of their choice. Also, the game will be free to watch but spectators are encouraged to bring a jar of peanut butter, jelly or fluff as a donation to the PB&J drive.
Further details, including team line-ups, will be announced at a later time.

ENP STAFF REPORTS

A 25-year-old West Avenue man was charged with DWI and criminal tampering after police say he struck the backhoe parked in front of City Hall — then attempted to move it.
Adam J. Masters, 382 West Ave., Front Apt., is accused of striking the rear of the construction vehicle on the south side of the roadway before patrol got there at approximately 11:23 p.m.
“Patrol arrived on the scene and found that a vehicle … had run into the rear of the backhoe and the vehicle was partially in the large hole that the backhoe was on top of,” according to the report. “A male in a dress shirt, tie, slacks and shoes had climbed into the backhoe and was attempting to gain access to the cab of the vehicle as patrol approached.”
Police asked him to step down from the vehicle, to which he replied, “As soon as I move this so I can get my car out.”
Masters was determined to be intoxicated and was subsequently charged with DWI, failure to keep right, improper lane use, and third-degree criminal tampering. He is due in City Court on Monday.

City workers tamp down stones in what used to be a hole in the parking lot in front of City Hall. Officials say the parking spaces will be usable by next week. (SCOTT LEFFLER / ENP STAFF) |
ENP STAFF REPORTS
news@eastniagarapost.com
City workers were busy tamping down stones this morning in the northeast corner of the parking lot at City Hall.
The lot has been torn up since summer and some of the parking space has been unusable while a huge hole existed in what had been parking spaces.
While the spaces will be able to be used next week, the project — repairing a water pipe that runs below the city lot — will not be completed until spring.

Some kids decorated just fine on their own, like the ones on the left. Others needed an extra hand or two. |

Wonder how long that cookie survived after being decorated. We're guessing not long. |
