“This is an annual event for us,” says Bonni Haney of the Student-Teacher show. “We have some great art teachers here and we love to show them off as well as the wonderful work they do with their students. A good teacher acts as a guide, so that their influence can be seen in the student’s work but does not dominate it. Rather, it blends with the student’s own imagination to create something unique.” The Student-Teacher show runs until May 9.
Janet Vacanti has been making jewelry for over 35 years. She first trained as a silversmith in 1977 but experimented in different mediums trying to find her style. Attracted to both industrial artifacts and nature she found that she could emulate both their qualities by combining found objects with organic shapes and colors. Natural aged patinas and "priors" (secret past history) are what attracted her to using found objects and recycled metals. Her love of up-cycling materials has made her look at the world around her in a different way.
Sam Vacanti has been drawing as long as he can remember. “The first one I recall,” he said, "being a large random scribble on manila paper, the resulting shapes filled with bright colors. ‘I see a bunny in there!’ my sister opined. It was my first feedback from a sympathetic critic. She liked it. I loved that she liked it. However, I saw a dragon. It is curious to me that 49 years down the line this experience is still the foundation of my picture making activity. The idea that a different set of eyes may see what I do not. It seems this is where the essence, the meat and the magic all reside.” The “Vacanti Arts,” exhibit runs until April 24.
The Market Street Art Studios, 247 Market St., are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays. There never an admission fee.

Downtown motorists this morning may have caught a preview of Saturday night's birthday candles for the city's 150th birthday celebration.
The Lockport Sesquicentennial committee watched as committee member Christopher Parada, executive director of the Historic Palace Theatre, tested out a sky lantern in front of the Palace. The lantern floated in front of the East Avenue landmark before taking off northwest.
Saturday night, 150 of the lanterns will be launched from the same location to conclude the city's birthday party, taking place at the Palace beginning at 7 p.m. The lanterns will be launched by patrons who purchase any of the commemorative items being sold during the sesquicentennial celebration, including lawn signs, DVDs, banners, and pins.
Earlier in the evening, several guest speakers will commemorate the city's birthday, musical groups will perform, and sampling of the vignette video will also be shown. Cake and ice cream will be given out to patrons, as well.
Saturday morning, teams will participate in a scavenger hunt across the city, going to 14 locations to collect stamps on a commemorative certificate. The first teams to finish and return to City Hall will receive prizes. Sign ups for the free event are available online at Lockport150.com.
Later this year, the committee will host 150 events across nine days beginning June 27 with the annual Downtown Arts and Crafts festival and concluding on July 5 with the Taste of Lockport.

Transit Drive-In owner Rick Cohen will be the guest speaker for a presentation on the history of drive-ins at 2 p.m. April 11 at the Niagara History Center.
The Transit Drive-In — one of two still operating in East Niagara — opened in 1952 and was purchased by the Cohen family five years later. Cohen has many stories to share of growing up in this most unique family business that is now 58 years old.
Western New York was home to a wealth of drive-ins in their heyday. Cohen will discuss how the drive-in originated in the 1930s and reminisce about Erie and Niagara County drive-ins we visited in days gone by. Many Americans fell in love with drive-ins in their glory years, journeying to them in the “sofas on wheels” of the 1950’s. Today, minivans can hold an entire family and then some as everyone makes a night of it in front of the big screen. Cohen will describe what the future holds for this beloved form of entertainment.

With cake and ice cream already in place for the City of Lockport's 150th birthday celebration on April 11, arrangements are now being made for "candles."
The latest detail to emerge from the party preparations for the day-long downtown celebration is that 150 Chinese lanterns will be launched skyward in the evening. Each lantern serving as a birthday candle, they will be lit and then released by attendees.
Some will be launched by those who took part in the birthday video recorded at LCTV. Others will be sold or given away — on a first-come-first-serve basis — to those who purchase sesquicentennial merchandise that will be available for sale at the grand gala at the Historic Palace Theatre. The sales of the merchandise will be used to fund the events put on by the Sesquicentennial Planning Committee.
Organizers are planning on having East Avenue shut down in front of the Palace to allow for 150 lantern bearers to release in front of the marquee.
The day is set to begin with a scavenger hunt through the city before the birthday celebration at the Palace at 7 p.m. The evening will include the airing of the video vignette celebrating Lockport’s history, performances by many local groups and special speakers throughout the night.
More details and a list of other events are available at Lockport150.com.

Everyone is invited to celebrate the City of Lockport’s 150th birthday with two special events planned for April 11.
Lockport was incorporated on April 11, 1865 by an act of the New York State Legislature, making it the first city in Niagara County. To commemorate this, a Sesquicentennial Planning Committee comprised of Lockport residents has planned a history-based family scavenger hunt and birthday party for April 11, 2015
The scavenger hunt, planned for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will lead teams around to 14 locations in the city, where participants will collect stamps on a specially prepared letter of achievement. Each location must be figured out from clues given to find them. Once at the location, hunters will find a designated person to stamp their letter. Some locations require the team to answer a trivia question. Others require them to say or do something. Prizes will be awarded to the first teams to return to City Hall with their letter fully stamped. The letter will then become a keepsake, suitable for framing.
The fun-filled day will serve as a preview for a nine-day celebration taking place from June 27 through July 5 in which 150 events will take place throughout the city including the annual downtown Arts & Crafts Festival on Main Street, the Independence Day Parade, fireworks and the Taste of Lockport — moved from its normal August date to correspond with the special festivities.
The Sesquicentennial Planning Committee will be creating several other events to take place during the week and hopes that other Lockport residents, groups, businesses and churches will add their own, making June 27 through July 5 the most exciting, action-packed nine days in the history of historic Lockport.
A website ― Lockport150.com ― is under development to allow people to view the full calendar of events, add their own, and learn a little bit more about Lockport. The organization is also on Facebook, Twitter and other social media, all with the username Lockport150.

It's not every day you turn 150.
For the City of Lockport, that day is April 11. And on that day, Lockport's Historic Palace Theatre is planning a day full of events to celebrate the city's sesquicentennial. But that's just the beginning.
From June 27 through July 5, the Lock City is planning to hold 150 different events in celebration of the city's 150th birthday. The week will kick off with the annual Lockport Arts & Crafts Festival on June 27 and 28 and it will conclude with three days of major events: a parade on July 3 with an anticipated 150 participating groups, the annual July 4th fireworks, and the annual Taste of Lockport, which the Lockport Business Association is moving from August to coincide with the week-long celebration.
In between the weekends' events will be smaller scale events being put together by a recently formed sesquicentennial committee comprised of people inside and outside City Hall. The committee will announce more events as they are planned.
