ENP STAFF REPORTS
news@eastniagarapost.com
With cake and ice cream already in place for the City of Lockport's 150th birthday celebration on April 11, arrangements are now being made for "candles."
The latest detail to emerge from the party preparations for the day-long downtown celebration is that 150 Chinese lanterns will be launched skyward in the evening. Each lantern serving as a birthday candle, they will be lit and then released by attendees.
Some will be launched by those who took part in the birthday video recorded at LCTV. Others will be sold or given away — on a first-come-first-serve basis — to those who purchase sesquicentennial merchandise that will be available for sale at the grand gala at the Historic Palace Theatre. The sales of the merchandise will be used to fund the events put on by the Sesquicentennial Planning Committee.
Organizers are planning on having East Avenue shut down in front of the Palace to allow for 150 lantern bearers to release in front of the marquee.
The day is set to begin with a scavenger hunt through the city before the birthday celebration at the Palace at 7 p.m. The evening will include the airing of the video vignette celebrating Lockport’s history, performances by many local groups and special speakers throughout the night.
More details and a list of other events are available at Lockport150.com.
