The Lockport Express celebrates after its third goal of the game this evening. The team went on to beat the Syracuse Stampede 4-3 in overtime. (ENP STAFF PHOTO)

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY — The Lockport Express found a different way to beat the same team Sunday. Having won a 7-4 runaway on Saturday, it took overtime to beat the Syracuse Stampede this evening.

The game started slow with both teams playing a more focused defense than in the previous game. It took Lockport's Junior A team 18:02 to get on the board with a goal by Mark Friol from Christopher Gasiewicz and Ryan Logar.

In the second, Syracuse tied it up at 5:20 with an unassisted goal by Xavier Perron. The Stampede then went up 2-1 with a goal by Joey Dupuis from Erik Smith and Braeden Pearl at 6:48. The Express tied it up at 9:46 with a 5-on-3 power play goal by Michael Crissy from Daniel Golba. At 11:23, Golba scored another power play goal or the Express, putting them up 3-2 with help from Christian Whitcomb.

The Express seemed to go up 4-2 minutes later, but the goal was waved off due to an Express player being in the crease. At 17:00, Syracuse tied it back up, this time 3-3, with a goal by Pearl from Dupuis and Dan Buehler.

The third period was scoreless, thanks to a breakaway save by Express netminder Ian Stahl at 3:44.

Four minutes and 18 seconds into overtime, Nick Siracuse landed the clincher with help from Cole Brooks and Peter Guido. It was the 17-year-old's eighth goal of the season. At 19 points, he leads the team by far.

"That's why Siracuse is our captain," Express Head Coach Frank Vecchio said after the tame. "He's a big winner."

Vecchio commented on the vastly different style of play between Saturday's and this evening's games: "Today I thought was a much faster game. I think Syracuse was a little rested ... they played a lot stronger game."

Tonight's close victory may not be as much fun for offensive minded fans as Saturday's seven goals were, but Vecchio said games like today's serve a purpose. "It's a good test for the guys to really see what kind of heart they have — what kind of gumption we've got."

With the win, the Express are now 7-5 on the 2014-2015 season. Their next game is Saturday in Wikes Barre, Penn., against the Wilkes Barre Miners with a followup game on Sunday against the same team. Lockport has a 2-1 record against the Miners this season.

The team is expected to practice in Cornerstone Arena Monday for the first time since a faulty condenser shuttered the arena just over a week ago. The team will play its first game at Cornerstone on Nov. 14.

The Express and Stampede practice before today's game.
The two teams play again Sunday.
NIAGARA UNIVERSITY — The Syracuse Stampede scored the first goal of the game this afternoon. They also scored the last three. The seven in between, however, clinched the game for the Lockport Express.

Syracuse started the scoring off at 11:43 of the first period with a goal by Erik Smith from Braeden Pearl. Lockport struck back quickly, however, with a Daniel Golba goal. Michael Crissy and Peter Guido got the assists at 13:10. Less than two minutes later, Frank Vecchio Jr. made it 2-1 Express on a goal with help from Anthony Merante and Justin Durkee.

The Express owned the second period, netting five goals. The first of the period, a backhander, from Christopher Gasiewicz was netted with help from Ryan Logar and Christian Whitcomb at 4:45. At 6:12, Dillon Hayes made it 4-1 Lockport with help from Justin Blake — playing in his first game for the Express — and Durkee. At 10:29, Logar scored with help from Vecchio and Nick Siracuse to make it 5-1. One hundred seconds later, Durkee netted one with help from Hayes and Blake. Hayes made it 7-1 Express at 19:45 with assists from Alex Bottenfield and Whitcomb.

"We played really well in the middle frame," Express Head Coach Frank Vecchio said. "We got a little sloppy in the third — stopped moving our feet."

With today's win, Lockport is now 6-6 on the 2014-2015 season.
Their sloppiness led to Syracuse contolling of the period, starting almost immediately. Pearl got his second point of the afternoon, assisted by Valters Midegs just 52 seconds in. At 10:26, Raymond Falso scored with assists by Joey Dupuis and Xavier Perron. Just a minute and two seconds later, Smith scored his second, assisted by Pearl, making the final score 7-4 Lockport.

"I don't think we got tired, I think we got complacent," Vecchio said. "What happens is, you get away from your systems. Everybody wants to score goals because it's fun. You get away from what got you to seven to one. That's what happens, you let 'em back in the game a little bit."

The two teams face off again Sunday at 5:20 p.m., again at Dwyer Arena.

"They'll be more ready to play tomorrow," Vecchio said, explaining that the Stampede only arrived in town this morning.

With today's win, the Express improve to 6-5 on the season.

Of note, the team is expected to begin practicing in Cornerstone Arena again on Monday. Arena operations had shut down due to a problem with the condenser.

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY — After falling behind 2-0 during a sluggish first period, the Lockport Express came back to tie the game at 2 in the second period. But they couldn't go ahead for the win. The defending league champion Jersey Shore Wildcats beat the Express 4-2 at Dwyer Arena tonight with a little help from a WNY hockey alum who tallied an assist for the Jersey team.

Alex Racicot opened the scoring for the Wildcats 4:04 into the game putting the puck past Ian Stahl, who was getting his second start in net for the Express. Kevin Gruber got an assist on the goal. At 9:33, Martin Zahora put the Wildcats up 2-0 on a goal that went off Shotwell and into the net. Tim O'Connor of Warsaw and Arthur Raevsky assisted on the goal.

With just 15 seconds to go in the opening period, Ryan Logar put the Express on the board with assist from Anthony Merante and Nick Siracuse. The Express used the momentum going into the second period, playing a solid 20 minutes against the visiting team. At 10:08, Jacob Burford landed a shorthanded goal for the Express, knotting the game at 2. Siracuse again got the assist.

Things were going good for the Express until 1:08 into the third period when Daniel Vosyka scored for Jersey, putting the team up 3-2. Express Coach Frank Vecchio said the goal appeared to take the wind out of his team's sails. At 6:30, Zahora scored again for the Cats with an assist from Adam Skutchan, putting the score at 4-2, where it stood at the final buzzer.

Vecchio said his team played a solid game against the now 7-0 Wildcats with goaltending being the difference maker.

After six games, Vecchio said they've found their number one goaltender in Tyler Shotwell, who has a 3.5 GAA in two games. Stahl, meanwhile has a 5.0 GAA in two games and Muglia Giancarlo's GAA is 6.0 in two games. The coach gave each netminder two games to prove themselves.

The Express is slated to play two games next Saturday — a "home" game against the Cape Cod Islanders at Morrisville State Ice Complex at  11 a.m. followed by an away game at the same arena just six hours later against the Maine Wild.

The Lockport Junior A team is expected to start practicing at Lockport's Cornerstone Arena on Tuesday. Their first true home game is scheduled for Oct. 18 against the Roc City Royals.

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY — The Lockport Express scored early and often Saturday night, lighting the lamp nine times on their way to their third victory of the season.

Their opponent, the Roc City Royals, found the back of the net towards the end of the game, but by then the game was out of hand — in more ways than one.

Nick Siracuse started the scoring at 6:02 of the first period. He tallied three assists on the night, as well. Alex Bottenfield followed up just shy of five minutes later at 10:52, making it 2-0 Lockport. Peter Guido made it 3-0 just a minute and 27 seconds later.

The second period started quiet, going nearly 13 minutes without a goal. But then then came in bunches. Anthony Merante opened the flood gates, scoring at 12:55, making it 4-0 Lockport. Jordan Pocobello made it 5-0 at 15:02. Sixty seconds later it was 6-0 with a goal by Ryan Logar. At 17:51, it was 7-0 Lockport with a goal by Daniel Gasiewicz.

Rochester got on the board twice in the last two minutes of the second period with goals by Wesley Austin at 18:19 and Reece Tucker at 19:54. But even with a whole period of hockey left to play, a rally was not in the cards for the Royals, who finished the second period down by five goals.

Again, the third period started slow with no scoring until more than halfway through when Mark Friol scored a four-on-four goal for Lockport at 11:52, putting them up 8-2. John Melcher closed the gap a little for Roc City with a goal at 15:34, making it 8-3. Lockport's Justin Durkee finished up the scoring at 17:39, putting Lockport of 9-3.

As the game wore on, it got scrappy. Penalty minutes added up. Scrums turned into fights. And many players were sent to the locker rooms early.

With 90 seconds to go in the game, even the crowd got scrappy, with a Roc City fan and a Lockport fan exchanging words. The same Express fan then had a shouting match with the Royals' bench before the referees asked him to leave.

Siracuse said he preferred the style of play of the Express' previous opponent, the Wilkes-Barre Miners, who play a faster paced, less gritty game.

Coach Frank Vecchio preferred the Miners, as well, saying he'd be happy if they never had to play the Royals again. Unfortunately for Vecchio, the two teams square off again at 12:30 p.m. at Rochester's Lakeshore Arena.

The teams then meet again on Oct. 18 for what is expected to be the Express' first game at Cornerstone Arena in Lockport.

With the victory Saturday night, the Express improve to 3-1 on the season, while Roc City falls to 1-4.
