LPD talks with the driver of a vehicle that crashed into 210 Market St.
Lockport police are on scene at a crash involving a car and a building.

The crash occurred around 11:05 p.m. when the car, traveling east on Market Street, lost control and crashed into the west end of Lockport Canalside Banquet Center, also known as Lockport Locks & Erie Canal Cruises, 210 Market St.

The driver told police that his gas pedal stuck, causing him to lose control before he struck the building, taking out a fire hydrant in the process. It appears as though the vehicle spun before striking the building, as the rear of the car is what hit the frame. The portion of the building he hit is made of wood and not structurally significant, although it is attached to the main building. It is an enclosed patio used for weddings and parties.

Police said the crash remains under investigation. They did not believe that alcohol played a factor.

The driver, a white male, appeared uninjured, although Twin Cities Ambulance did respond to the scene.

Market Street remains closed while the accident is under investigation.

This fire hydrant should be upright ... and several yards to the west.

Hundreds of bicyclists en route from Buffalo to Albany stopped in Lockport today to check out some area attractions.

Bicyclists came from 36 states and as far away as Australia.
The 17th Annual "Cycling the Erie Canal" bike tour, which has more than 600 cyclists making the 400-mile bicycling tour from Buffalo to Albany, had scheduled stops at the Erie Canal Discovery Center, the Lockport Cave and Underground Boat Ride, and Lockport Locks & Erie Canal Cruises before heading east towards Middleport this afternoon where they had a rest stop planned at Middleport Municipal Park.

The eight-day recreational bicycling tour highlights "the beauty, history, culture and recreational appeal of the Canal system and the Canalway Trail, popular tourism destinations in New York State," according to the New York State Canal Corp.

Roughly two-thirds of the 400-mile bicycle tour takes place on the completed portion of the Canalway Trail. When complete, the New York State Canalway Trail will span more than 500 miles and connect numerous cities, towns and villages along the Erie, Cayuga-Seneca, Oswego and Champlain Canals, making it one of the longest multi-use recreational trails in the country.

construction. (ENP FILE PHOTO BY HEATHER N. GRIMMER)
The Lockport Mural on Main Committee will sponsor a benefit canal cruise aboard Lockview VI at 6 p.m. July 2 at Lockport Locks & Erie Canal Cruises.

The event is one of a series of activities designed to help raise $30,000 needed to create an historic Erie Canal-themed mural on the east side wall of 51 Main Street.

Following the one-hour canal cruise aboard the authentic paddle wheel boat, attendees will be served dinner at Canalside’s patio grove and will be entertained by acclaimed pianist Ken Kaufman and soloist Melissa Croff.

The Mural on Main Canal Cruise is also one of the week-long events of the City of Lockport Sesquicentennial, and details are available at Lockport150.com.

The Mural on Main Project is chaired by George Fritz, owner of Mills Jewelers. Renowned muralist Augustina Droze has been commissioned to create the 42-foot high by 60-foot wide color painting, which has already attracted the support of nearly 100 contributors to the campaign.

According to Fritz, the mural will be painted in a realistic and very detailed style on a location which may be viewed by both passersby on Main Street as well as visitors traveling on the Erie Canal. Augustina Droze’s artistic career includes 14 years as a muralist, which have commanded the attention of public art enthusiasts from both throughout the United States and overseas.

Attendance for the Canal Cruise is open to the public. Reservations for the evening event are available at $50 per person, and may be made by calling committee member David Kinyon at 638-1119 or online at MuralonMain.org. Advance reservations are required, and are limited to 150 registrants.

Ten journalists who focus on tourism are spending three days in Niagara County prior to their conference in the Finger Lakes later this week.

The Midwest Travel Writers Association (MTWA) are being shown the sights by the Niagara Tourism and Convention Corp. The group will participate in an agenda that showcases the region, including a pair of stops in Lockport and two tastes of Lockport at other stops.

On the list of stops Tuesday is Lockport Locks & Erie Canal Cruises, and the First Presbyterian Church — where they will view the church's famous Tiffany Windows. They will also be treated to a dessert bar from Cream & Sugar Cafe while at Old Fort Niagara, and wine from the Flight of Five Winery while at the Remington Tavern & Seafood Exchange in North Tonawanda.

Other events for the tourism writers and photographers include a visit of Niagara Falls State Park, a ride on the Maid of the Mist, and a sampling of culinary favorites at Hard Rock Café in Niagara Falls. Accommodations for the journalists are provided by The Giacomo Hotel, a boutique hotel in downtown Niagara Falls.

During their stay the group and NTCC will be using the social media hashtag #tasteniagara to track and publicize what they find appealing, interesting and useful to their respective audiences.

“We were thrilled to hear that Niagara USA was the most requested pre-tour of the MTWA conference. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to highlight some of our top attractions, eateries and accommodations to this esteemed group of travel writers,” said John Percy, NTCC president and CEO. “We look forward to seeing continued coverage beyond this trip.”

Among the attendees are writers with credentials from AAA, Woman’s Day, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Chicago Tribune, and published guide book authors and photographers.

Following their three days in Niagara County, they will head east to their bi-annual meeting in the Finger Lakes, hosted by Finger Lakes Visitors Connection – the tourism agency for Ontario County.
