ENP STAFF REPORTS
news@eastniagarapost.com
Eastern Niagara Hospital (ENH) has been approved by the American Osteopathic Association to establish a Family Medicine Residency Program.
Sponsored by the Lake Erie Consortium for Osteopathic Medical Training (LECOMT), the hospital will serve as a site for residents in the Family Medicine Program. Residents will complete rotations through numerous specialties, while being mentored by members of the hospital’s medical staff who have agreed to serve as faculty.
Joseph V. Mure, MD will serve as director of the program. Dr. Mure has an extensive background in the field of family medicine and education. A graduate of the University at Buffalo School of Medicine, Dr. Mure recently served as the vice chair of clinical services and assistant professor for the Department of Family Medicine at the University at Buffalo, as well as the family medicine medical director for UBMD.
Dr. Mure is a diplomat of the American Board of Family Medicine. He has been the recipient of several awards and commendations, including being selected as one of Business First’s Healthcare 50 Award Winners in 2014.
“I am excited to be the program director for the new family medicine residency," Dr. Mure said. "This will be a first for the hospital and we appreciate the support of the medical staff. This program will provide us with the opportunity to offer a rich educational experience, where residents will be able to follow their patients throughout all aspects of their care; through testing, consults, inpatient and outpatient. My main goal will be to recruit, train and retain primary care physicians for Western New York.”
Nicholas Varallo, a 35-year member of the Eastern Niagara Hospital medical staff, has agreed to serve as the program’s administrative director of medical education. Dr. Varallo has a private practice in the Lockport community, specializing in family medicine. He also serves as a physician in the ENH Emergency Department. Dr. Varallo has held numerous medical leadership positions at the hospital, and currently is the chief of family medicine. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Family Physicians.
Dr. Varallo added, “I am looking forward to serving in this capacity as we start a new chapter in the Hospital’s history. I’m also grateful to my colleagues who have agreed to assist with me in this capacity. Their commitment and willingness to share their expertise will go a long way as the residents train for their own independent practices in medicine.”
Residents are currently being selected for the program start in July of 2016.

ENP STAFF REPORTS
news@eastniagarapost.com
The nurses union at East Niagara Hospital have agreed to a three-year contract which calls for an 8 percent raise over the course of the deal.
The contract, which covers 157 employees at ENH-Lockport, was approved by the nursing staff nearly unanimously on Thursday. It is retroactive to April 1.
ENH healthcare workers have been at odds with hospital administration, calling for a change in hospital leadership last month. That squabble listed several concerns with the administration, but did not mention pay for nurses. It is unknown if the new contract voids the group's demands.
A call to ENH-Lockport representatives was not returned Monday evening.

ENP STAFF REPORTS

SOMERSET — A two-car collision at Lake and Hartland roads claimed the life of a 79-year-old man Tuesday morning.
According to the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, Francis Landers, a passenger in a full-size Ford van, was killed after the vehicle was struck on the passenger side door.
The van was driven by a 38-year-old home care aid that reportedly stopped for a stop sign while heading southbound on Hartland Road, and then entered traffic failing to yield the right of way to a Jeep SUV heading eastbound on Lake Road. The Jeep was occupied by a 66-year-old female operator alone in her vehicle.
The driver of the Ford van was transported to ECMC, while the driver of Jeep to Eastern Niagara Hospital. Both were taken via ambulance and treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Coroner Ken Lederhouse pronounced Landers deceased at the scene. The accident remains under investigation.

We, the undersigned believe that the current Board and Administration of ENH are incapable of:RELATED LINKS:
1. Developing and implementing policies and programs that put patient and care giver safety first
2. Successfully managing ENH resources, ensuring that our life saving system continues to exist
3. Attracting, developing and retaining additional doctors, nurses and staff
We the undersigned demand that the current administration be replaced with one that can:
1. Put patient safety first
2. Ensure the safety of the healthcare staff
3. Collaborate with strategic staff leadership, allowing them strong voices to improve standards and have a more significant impact across the entire health care system.
• If the current board members cannot accomplish this, we request that they resign and make way for those that can.

ENP STAFF REPORTS

TOWN OF LOCKPORT — Eastern Niagara Hospital will host a grand opening celebration event for its new ambulatory surgery center from 2 - 7 p.m. Monday.
The grand opening will include tours of the facility and details on the $3 million project. Several local establishments, including DeFlippo’s Restaurant, Donna Eick’s Divine Catering, and the Cream & Sugar CafĂ© will be serving complimentary refreshments for attendees. Dr. Varallo’s Spring Lake Winery will also be providing wine tastings.
Niagara Regional Surgery Center, located at 5875 South Transit Road, is a state-of-the-art surgical center, and the first of its kind in Niagara County. The new facility has four surgical suites, as well as pre-operative areas, recovery and support functions. Surgical specialties to be provided there include orthopedics, plastic/reconstructive surgery, gynecology, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, and general surgery.
Niagara Regional Surgery Center will accommodate additional patients from East Niagara and surrounding areas, to provide cost-effective and efficient care in a state-of-the-art setting, and to respond to a public desire for outpatient surgical services in the region. The completion of the ambulatory surgery center culminates a number of projects at ENH’s Transit Road site, which also includes Western New York Occupational Medicine, Express Care, primary medical care, and an imaging center.
ENH officials say the project completes the hospital’s effort to grow its selection of healthcare services in a manner responsive to evolving health care trends, paying particular attention to the voice of the community. Redevelopment of the Transit Road location into a high throughput outpatient care destination with operating rooms, urgent care center and a diagnostic radiology center will reposition and complement the Hospital for continued success in the area.
The opening of this new center has also created new jobs in the region, including positions for Nurses, OR technicians, and clerical staff.
The public is invited to attend the event, which will include a ribbon cutting ceremony at 5:30 p.m.
