ENP STAFF REPORTS
news@eastniagarapost.com
NEWFANE -- A Prospect Street man told Niagara County Sheriff's deputies that someone broke into his home while he was incarcerated and stole $200 and an iPod.
The man told police on Wednesday that he was in Niagara County Jail from Oct. 16 until Nov. 13 and noticed the items missing upon his return to his apartment.
The man said maintenance men were reportedly in his apartment while he was gone, a fact which NCSO confirmed. The men in question told police that they had to enter the unit to discard of rotten food, which had been left on the counter and was causing a foul odor.
They said they discarded the food and secured the unit, but the complainant told patrol that his rear door was unlocked and a window was open when he returned from jail.
Patrol did not observe any physical evidence or signs or forced entry at the scene. A suspect is unknown at this time.
