Unshackle Upstate Executive Director Greg Biryla issued a statement today chiding Albany politicians for considering pushing ahead with a minimum wage increase.

Biryla said the planned hike could halt current signs of economic progress by imposing new costs on businesses.

Biryla's statement follows in its entirety:
Unshackle Upstate strongly objects to any talk of a special legislative session that would rush a decision on an unprecedented minimum wage increase. The public deserves a thorough discussion of the Governor’s proposal – including the billions of dollars in new costs it will impose on businesses, non-profits and local governments.

We’re finally beginning to see signs of economic progress in some parts of Upstate after decades of decline. We fear that a massive minimum wage increase will undermine that progress.

The proposal to increase the state’s minimum wage should be considered through the regular legislative process, not as part of some cynical Albany backroom deal.

Before lawmakers take any action to increase the state’s minimum wage, we need to hear from all stakeholders about how they will be impacted by a minimum wage of more than $30,000 per year for a full-time employee.
