ENP STAFF REPORTS
news@eastniagarapost.com
GASPORT — A Hartland Road man picking up scrap along the road thought nothing of his Friday afternoon find — and then he got a closer look at it.
The man called Niagara County Sheriff's deputies on Monday to report that his latest haul included what he believed to be part of an bank cash machine.
He told patrol that he found the item on the east side of Hartland Road approximately 100 yards south of Lake Road in the Town of Somerset around 4 p.m. Friday. He said he did not find the item to be suspicious in any manner upon first finding it and taking it home. He said he had planned to scrap the metal, and upon further investigation, believed the item may be part of an ATM.
Patrol secured identifying information from the item and checked with dispatch to see if the item was reported lost or stolen. Dispatch was unable to return any information on the item and issued the man a property receipt for the item before taking it to a locked storage facility.
In January, thieves reportedly tried to pry the front off an ATM at a Somerset restaurant, but that attempt proved fruitless, according to an earlier report.
Patrol completed a property management form that was turned over directly to NCSO CSI.
