ENP STAFF REPORTS

TOWN OF LOCKPORT — A 46-year-old Niagara County Jail inmate from Niagara Falls is facing new charges after corrections officers found pot inside his breathing machine.
Joseph Mauldin, 810 Ashland Ave., Niagara Falls, was found to be in possession of an orange balloon containing marijuana. The balloon was hidden inside Mauldin's CPAP machine, according to the Niagara County Sheriff's Office.
Prison officials found the pot after a mental health staff member at the jail alerted a corrections officer reported an odor of marijuana coming from Mauldin's cell. After the C.O. confirmed the smell, jail officials conducted a search, finding the balloon in the CPAP machine. The marijuana was seized.
Mauldin, who was already in jail on charges of criminal sale of a controlled substance, now faces second-degree promoting prison contraband charges. He was arraigned in Town of Lockport Court on Sunday and returned to Niagara County Jail on $500 bail. He is scheduled to return to court on Thursday.
