ENP STAFF REPORTS
news@eastniagarapost.com
Lockport's Fire Board will convene for another meeting Sunday at 8 p.m.
The board had an 8 p.m. meeting last night in which they were expected to lay off five firefighters following a unanimous vote by the Common Council to de-fund fire firefighter positions. The Fire Board adjourned the meeting without taking action, however.
Fire Board President Pete Robinson confirmed that he called the meeting for Sunday night of his own will — and wasn't told to by anyone in City Hall.
The Common Council vote Wednesday night adjusted the budget for 2014 to remove the positions, but the Council itself does not have the authority to hire, fire, lay off or discipline members of LFD. That charge is up to the Fire Board. It is unknown where the funds are coming from to pay the salaries of the five eliminated positions, since the budget change was effective immediately.
A call to Mayor Anne McCaffrey was not immediately returned.
