ENP STAFF REPORTS

VanDeMark Chemical is sponsoring a hazardous materials response training session on Friday at the Niagara County Fairgrounds.
This coordinated session involves elements of the Niagara County Hazmat team, Lockport City Fire and Police departments, and Niagara County’s Technical Rescue team. This year’s exercise is designed to be a more of an in-depth training session to help facilitate the sharing of information and regional emergency response resources.
Also joining the exercise is HAZMAT Environmental Group of Buffalo, a local hazardous materials logistics company, and TRIAD Synergy Group, a leading distributor of fire and safety protection products.
The event involves a rotation of various training stations; all designed to help area responders develop an understanding of the latest technology and emergency response capabilities available within the region. Each station is supported by an area expert to showcase the training segment or technology and answer questions on the proper deployment. As an example, one of the stations is a detailed training segment on responding to a leaking solvent or gasoline tanker and the latest tools for quickly mitigating this type of hazard.
According to a press release by VanDeMark, "Although the scope of chemical manufacturing has dwindled in our area, chemistry is still a large part of many area businesses; whether as part of manufacturing, cleaning or for refrigeration. Because chemistry is present in many small and large manufacturing and services industries alike it makes sense that we take time to focus on what resources are available if ever the need for help arises in Niagara, or neighboring counties
VanDeMark Chemical, as an American Chemistry Council member and Responsible Care Company, feels it is important to take the opportunity to share chemical and facility information with area responders to ensure we are transparent with our activities, and to strengthen communications across organizations, the release explained.
