WRIGHTS CORNERS — A camper that a Ridge Road man was taking apart to scrap caught fire when he and a friend left to quench their thirst Tuesday evening.

According to a report filed by the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, the man and a friend were taking the metal trim off the oustide of the camper when they decided to take a break to go to Tops and get something to drink at around 6:30 p.m.

The owner of the camper said he was only gone for five to ten minutes when he saw the fire trucks go past Tops and had a feeling something was wrong. He followed the fire trucks and saw the camper was on fire when they returned to Ridge Road.

The man's mother told patrol that she had tried to get a hose to extinguish the fire, but it had already grown too large, so she instead called 911.

The man said there was no power to the camper and no gas near the camper at the time of the fire. The man's friend told patrol that he believed someone had to have started the fire because they were gone such a short time.

The camper's owner said the value lost in the camper was only approximately $100 in scrap, but there was also damage to the paint on a pickup truck in the driveway and to the siding of the house.

Wrights Corners Vol. Fire Co. requested the Niagara County Fire Investigators to the scene. The Niagara County Fire Investigators stated the cause of the fire is currently undetermined. The Niagara County Fire Investigators will continue the investigation.
