Lockport city officials have accepted a challenge from Danny Sheehan's Restaurant to dump buckets of cold water on their heads, according to City Clerk Richelle Pasceri.

The challenge was issued to Pasceri, Mayor Anne McCaffrey, City Treasurer Mike White and the entire Common Council, as well as DeFlippos Restaurant and Dan Stapleton as part of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

The Ice Bucket Challenge has been an internet craze for the past few weeks in which those challenged have 24 hours to take a video while they dump a bucket of ice water on their heads or donate $100 to the ALS Association. In the video, the challenged becomes the challenger and may nominate as many other people to perform the task as they wish.

Some have derided the phase as "slacktivism" — a way for people to look like their helping a cause without actually doing anything — but as of this morning, The ALS Association has received $15.6 million in donations compared to $1.8 million during the same time period last year (July 29 to August 18). These donations have come from existing donors and 307,598 new donors to The Association.

Saturday afternoon the staff of Molinaro's Ristorante accepted the challenge from James Knapp (video). In addition to taking the ice water bath, they donated $100 to the ALS Association and then passed the test on to other area restaurants including Frankies Pizza and Subs, Lock 34 Bar And Grill, Stevie V's Pizzeria, and Danny Sheehan's — which then made the challenge to the mayor and city officials.

Pasceri, a former employee of Sheehan's, said this morning that she's still weighing her options of who to challenge when she, the mayor and members of the council perform the task. City Treasurer Mike White is unable to perform the challenge.

Pasceri said the city officials taking part in the challenge will be doing so around 4:45 p.m. at the Flight of Five.
