ROYALTON — The Federal Aviation Administration is expected today take over the site of the plane crash at the Royalton Airport to begin its investigation.
The plane crashed shortly before noon Saturday just after takeoff.
The plane's sole occupant, 78-year-old John Schnabel of Williamsville, told Niagara County Sheriff's deputies after the crash that he was not sure exactly what happened, but believed his auto-pilot may have failed.
Several fire companies arrived on scene a short time later and assisted with removing Schnabel from the airplane. He was stabilized on a backboard and taken by Mercy Flight to ECMC.
The scene of the crash has been guarded by Niagara County Sheriff's deputies while they have waited for the FAA's arrival.
