TOWN OF LOCKPORT — What began as a call of police agencies looking for a man they were told was trying to abduct children turned out to be something completely different.

The Niagara County Sheriff's Office and Lockport Police Department were looking for a man that had reportedly tried to snatch two children on Locust Street Extension this morning. When they found him, however, they learned that the original complaint had no validity — and he was trying to help get a lost dog to its home.

"On the surface, it seems a good citizen picked up a loose dog and was trying to find (the) owner," Niagara County Sheriff Jim Voutour said. The man found the dog on Locust Street Extension near Badger Drive. He then tried to find the owner, pulling into a driveway where two kids were playing and asking them if it was their dog. The children's mother saw the van pull into the driveway and approach her kids and called 911.

"It turned out his story was legitimate," Voutour said. "He just made the poor decision of talking to children. ... The guy had all the good intention in the world. He just used bad judgment (in approaching kids)."

Voutour said the mother did exactly as she should have in a case of stranger danger. "What's the typical story? 'Do you want to see my dog?' "

In the end, however, the dog was turned over to animal control, its owner was found, and no charges were filed.

"The dog lived on Badger and was returned to the owner," Voutour said.

  7. if you are an older male, driving a tinted out extended van, the last thing you want to do is pull up to a couple kids and ask them if they can help you find your dog or say I found a dog help me find its home!
