Twenty-eight people were charged with driving while intoxicated over a five-day "crackdown" period by Niagara County law enforcement offices.

The "Memorial Day DWI Crackdown Enforcement," which took place from May 22 through May 27, involved the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, Niagara Falls Police Department, North Tonawanda Police Department, New York State Park Police, Lockport Police Department, Middleport Police Department, Lewiston Police Department, Town of Niagara Police Department, Barker Police Department, and the Somerset Police Department.

All agencies involved utilized increased patrol units that were specifically designated for DWI enforcement. In addition to the 28 DWI arrests, these extra patrol units also had 26 non-DWI arrests and issued approximately 465 traffic tickets, according to the Niagara County Sheriff's Office.

Future "crackdown" periods are already scheduled in 2014 with all agencies being involved.
