TOWN OF LOCKPORT — A Lincoln Place man and a South Lockport Fire Co. firefighter were injured and seven people were in need of a place to stay following a grease fire early this morning.
According to a press release from the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, there was heavy smoke coming from 6557 Lincoln Place when they arrived around 1:40 a.m. Sheriff's personnel and fire co. personnel entered to make sure everyone was out. All but one apartment on the 3rd floor had been evacuated.
Patrol was able to alert the three occupants and get them out of the smoke filled apartment building.
It was found that the occupant in apartment H had heated some vegetable oil on the stove and fell asleep. Upon waking up, he realized the oil had ignited and he attempted to remove the pan when it popped and splattered him with hot oil. The occupants then left the building while calling 911.
Damage was contained to fire damage in apartment H and minor water damage in apartment L. The male occupant of apartment H suffered minor burns on his torso, arms and foot. He was transported to ECMC for treatment. Also, a South Lockport Fire Co. firefighter sustained lacerations from glass to his left and right hands and was treated at Eastern Niagara Hospital-Lockport.
The Red Cross was called to the scene of the fire to help with lodging for four adults and three children.
