ENP STAFF REPORTS
news@eastniagarapost.com
Excellus BlueCross BlueShield and Univera Healthcare have issued pleas to their customers to claim funds that the customers had received via check in 2010 but never cashed.
According to the companies, which issued separate press releases on the matter, more than 10,000 individuals and health care providers in New York state, including many in Niagara County, have forgotten about more than $1.4 million in checks sent by Univera Healthcare, as well as by Excellus BlueCross BlueShield and their parent companies. If the funds aren’t claimed by the end of August, the health insurer is required by law to turn the money over to the Comptroller of the State of New York.
"This is money that was paid for claims or refunded premiums." said Art Wingerter, Univera Healthcare president. "It belongs to our members and providers and we want to make sure they have one more chance to claim it."
A complete list of people and providers with outstanding checks, along with instructions on how to claim those forgotten funds, is online at the respective websites of the insurers. For Univera, that website is univerahealthcare.com/forgottenfunds. For Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, it is excellusbcbs.com/forgottenfunds.
Univera and Excellus each have a claim system set up.
To claim a Univera check prior to August 31, current health plan members can call the Customer Service phone number on their member ID card. Former members, or those calling on behalf of an estate, can call Univera Healthcare at 1-877-242-9464.
Current Excellus customers are asked to call the phone number on your member identification card, as well. If you are no longer a health plan member, or if you are calling on behalf of the estate of a family member, call Excellus BlueCross BlueShield: 1-877-757-3850.
Checks will be mailed to claimants by their insurer after August 31.
