COMPETITION

The wineries of the Niagara Wine Trail took home a multitude of medals from the 2014 Finger Lakes International Wine Competition, held March 29 - 30 in Rochester. The competition featured over 3,700 wine entries from 20 countries; including entries from each of the 50 states, and from six Canadian provinces. The wines were judged by 75 of the world's top judges from 16 countries.

The Niagara Wine Trail wineries took home a combined total of 34 awards across the gold, silver, and bronze rankings. Four gold medals were awarded, which included Honeymoon Trail Winey's "Diamond," a 2013 vintage 100 percent Diamond variety; Leonard Oakes Estate Winery's "Vidal Blanc Ice Wine," a 2011 vintage 100 percent Vidal Blanc variety; Schulze Vineyards & Winery "Vidal Blanc Ice Wine," a 2012 vintage 100 percent Vidal Blanc variety, and The Winery at Marjim Manor's "Lady of the Manor," which is a 2013 vintage 100 percent Concord wine.

Eleven silver medals and 19 bronze medals were granted across the wineries as well. A Gust of Sun Winery & Vineyard received a silver and three ronze; Black Willow Winery, two bronze; Honeymoon Trail Winery, three silver and two bronze; Leonard Oakes Estate Winery, one silver and two bronze; Midnight Run Wine Cellars, one silver and one bronze; Niagara Landing Wine Cellars, one silver and one bronze; Schulze Vineyards & Winery, three silver and two bronze; Schwenk Wine Cellars, the trail's newest member, received one bronze; The Winery at Marjim Manor, three bronze and Vizcarra Vineyards at Becker Farms received one silver and two bronze.

The award-winning wines were an assortment of traditional vinifera, ice wine, fruit, non-vinifera and blended wines. The wide-range of these award-winning styles is a testament to the winemaking passion and uniqueness that each winery brings to the Niagara Wine Trail. Awards won may be viewed on the Niagara Wine Trail website.
