When Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski adds his name to New York state’s organ donor list this afternoon, he will be just the first of many Niagara County leaders doing so today.

That’s because Jastrzemski has spent the past weekend reaching out to local elected and appointed officials, making sure they “lead by example” and help reverse New York State’s second-worst-in-the-nation organ donor status. Jastrzemski, who heads up the county’s motor vehicle departments, said information provided to him by Upstate New York Transplant Services and the New York State Association of Counties convinced him that leadership is needed on the issue.

“I, myself, am not a donor, although I will fix that at 3 o’clock this afternoon,” Jastrzemski said this morning, before attending a UNYTS press conference in Buffalo urging greater donor registry participation. “I challenged many of my fellow elected and appointed leaders in county government and local municipalities to do the same, and they are leading from the front on this issue.”

New County Manager Richard E. Updegrove is among those supporting Jastrzemski’s efforts.

The group will join together at the Lockport DMV, 111 Main St., for a mass donor registry sign-up today at 3 p.m.

“We hope members of our community will understand how important this is, and join us in giving the gift of life,” Jastrzemski said.

TOWN OF LOCKPORT — At the Grand Opening of the new T.J. Maxx store, Lockport CARES Emergency Homeless Shelter was the lucky recipient of a very generous check for $5,000 from the TJX Foundation.

"This check was more than we could have hoped for" says Kim Mansfield, Financial Director. "It costs $41.34 to house a guest for one night, with TJ Maxx's generosity we will be able to welcome and serve our homeless here in Niagara County." Welcome to the Lockport community, TJ Maxx!"

Donations are being accepted for a Mill Street family who lost most of their possessions in a fire on Monday.

Leslie Huntington, Jessica Lewis and three children lost most of their clothes and personal items in the blaze, which started around 4:40 p.m. Monday. While the couple had moved most of their furniture to a new home they were moving into, they hadn't gotten to moving more intimate and day-to-day items.

Huntington's sister, Carla Patterson, said this afternoon that the family has received enough clothes for the children but are still in need of many items, including:
  • Men's large and extra-large shirts and size 32/32 pants
  • Women's small and medium shirts and size 3 pants
  • Boys shoes size 10
  • Boys shoes size 1
  • Household items including dishes, pans, blankets, and bedding
  • Dressers (while the dressers themselves had been moved to the new house, the drawers were still in the old house and destroyed by the fire)
  • Tools (Leslie is a roofer and lost most of his tools, including a portable air compressor and nail gun in the fire)
  • Gift cards
Huntington added that the family couch cushions were also lost in the fire. "We had moved couch, but we had left the cushions in the house. So we need a couch now."

The hardest loss to recuperate may be $2,600 in cash and materials for a job he was working on, but Huntington is keeping it all in perspective.

"The main thing is that my kids are okay. The other stuff can come back eventually," he said.

He said he appreciates the offers of support. "It definitely helps out a lot."

Those looking to donate can contact Patterson at 471-0108 or cpatterson@realtyusa.com. She can pick items up from those who are unable to deliver them.
