ENP STAFF REPORTS
news@eastniagarapost.com
The special Common Council work session to discuss the city assessor's position at 4:45 p.m. has been rescheduled to 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to Mayor Anne McCaffrey's office.
The meeting, called for by four the city's six aldermen, is designed to speak with Real Property Appraiser Lena Villella about the role and duties of the city assessor's office.
Villella could potentially assume the position of city assessor if the Common Council over-rides Mayor McCaffrey's veto at Wednesday's Council session. McCaffrey has the discretion to appoint to that position, but would be bound to appoint from either within the city's own Civil Service exam takers or someone doing the same job in another local municipality.
The position of city assessor has been a contentious one for years, but no more so than it has in the past two weeks. On Jan. 20, the Council voted to nix a shared services agreement with Niagara Falls to provide someone part-time to fill the assessor's role. At the same meeting, they voted to create a full-time assessor's position in the Lockport budget. McCaffrey has said she will veto the measure for financial and ethical reasons. Villella is a relative of Alderwoman Anita Mullane.
McCaffrey -- in a pre-recorded interview -- will appear on East Niagara Radio's "On the Record" at 8 p.m.
