ENP STAFF REPORTS
news@eastniagarapost.com
USA Hockey will make a "major announcement" Friday afternoon from the 18-yard line at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, according to a press release issued this morning from the Buffalo Sabres.
The 3 p.m. announcement will be aired live on the NHL Network. Speakers include Dave Ogrean, executive director, USA Hockey; Terry Pegula, owner, Buffalo Sabres/Buffalo Bills; Mike Bertsch, assistant executive director, USA Hockey; Russ Brandon, president, Buffalo Sabres/Buffalo Bills; and Jim Smith, president, USA Hockey.
Further details were not made available by the Sabres or USA Hockey, but there is rampant speculation that Buffalo will host the 2018 World Junior Hockey Championships. Buffalo was one of three finalists for the 2018 games -- along with Pittsburgh and St. Louis. And that makes the fact that the announcement will be made on the 18-yard-line significant. However, it doesn't explain why the announcement will be made at Ralph Wilson Stadium instead of First Niagara Center or Harbor Center.
NOTE: Story edited at 11:08 a.m. to include details about the 2018 World Junior Hockey Championships.
