Children ages seven through 12 are invited to celebrate Veterans’ Day at the History Center of Niagara County from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 11.

The program, “Trenches, Tanks and Truces,” will relate the history of World War I through a series of activities specifically designed for young children to learn about what was once called “The Great War.”

The activities will include identifying artifacts from the war, taking on the roles of world leaders, forming alliances and then declaring war on each other, making a toy tank and U-boat (German submarine) to take home, playing a game to simulate what it was like to be in the trenches, celebrating the 1914 Christmas truce between the English and the Germans with a special treat, finding out how animals were used in the war effort and leaning words and phrases that were commonly used during the war so that you can communicate with your comrades.  Finally at the end, the participants will learn why the “war to end all wars” led directly to the start of World War II 20 years later.

The cost of the program is $10 per child. Reservations are required. Parents are encouraged to leave their children for the duration of the program.

Call or email the History Center at 434-7433 or annmarie@niagarahistory.org for reservations and more information.

East Niagara Post is the official media sponsor of Hockey Day in Lockport.
