A Lockport woman whose iPhone was stolen from her vehicle Tuesday got her phone back intact and an Appleton man was charged with stealing it thanks to a security feature on the phone.

The woman told the Niagara County Sheriff's Office that while she was at Horizon Health Services on Davison Road, she had left the phone on the driver's seat of her car. When she came out, there was "a suspicious male in the area of her vehicle." While driving away, she realized the phone was missing.

That's when she turned to technology. The woman had her son activate the "find my iPhone" feature on her phone. It tracked it down to the Somerset House, a treatment center at 7397 Lake Road in Appleton.

The woman then called the Somerset house and spoke with a worker there, telling her the situation. She then activated an audible alarm on the phone, allowing the worker to find it in possession of a resident of the home named David Crawford, Jr.

That's when the complainant called NCSO, who went to the Somerset House and retrieved the woman's phone and interviewed Crawford Jr., who admitted to bringing the iPhone back to the Somerset House from Horizon Health Services in Lockport.

Crawford Jr. was charged with petit larceny and issued an appearance ticket for Lockport City Court on Oct. 7. The phone was returned to its rightful owner.
