Do you know who will make health care decisions for you if you can’t? It may not be who you think or would want to be making those decisions. October is designated as National Health Care Proxy Month to encourage families to have conversations to learn what they can do now to ensure their health care wishes are known and followed.

Niagara Hospice director of marketing and public relations, Tricia Degan says, “Everyone age 18 and older should have a Health Care Proxy; that one person whom they trust and have had a conversation with about how they want to be treated medically if they are unable to speak for themselves.” Degan said Niagara Hospice holds an Advance Care Planning program that is free and open to the community every April and October with the goal of helping more people to start the conversation – before it’s too late.

Niagara Hospice will hold an Advance Care Planning program at 3 p.m. Oct. 15 in the Niagara Hospice Administrative Building, 4675 Sunset Dr. Niagara Hospice medical social worker Cheryl Ferguson, BSW, MSW will discuss Health Care Proxies, Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) orders, Living Wills and MOLST. She will answer common questions about Advance Directives including what MOLST is and help participants understand the importance of choosing a trusted Health Care Proxy, as well as how to go about it.

Light refreshments will be served and it is free and open to the public. Free forms and handouts will also be available. Register by leaving a message at 280-0742. For more information, visit the Event Calendar page at NiagaraHospice.org.
