ENP STAFF REPORTS

TOWN OF LOCKPORT — A fire at a home on Evergreen Drive in the Woodlands Thursday morning is being investigated by the Niagara County Cause and Origin team.
According to the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, patrol responded to 586 Evergreen Dr,. around 2:55 a.m. for a report of a lawnmower on fire that had caught the home on fire. When they arrived, the homeowner told them that he was awakened by a male banging on his door yelling get the kids because the trailer was on fire. He evacuated the home and extinguished the fire with a hose prior to patrol and Rapids Fire Company arriving.
The homeowner said that there was what looked like a propane torch laying next to the left rear tire of the lawnmower, which patrol later observed. Patrol also observed what appeared to be footprint's in the dew that left between the shed and the trailer to the east towards the back yard.
The fire department was called off so NCSO could have a K-9 track the footprints. The Niagara Cause and Orgin Team was also to respond "since the fire appeared to be suspicious in nature." The K-9 tracked the footprints to a maintenance area, finding cigarette butts and a plastic oil bottle along the way. It continued to an open shed in the backyard of another home on Chestnut Drive.
The propane torch, cigarette butts and the oil can were secured by Niagara County Fire Investigator Barry Korbin and the case was forwarded to the NCSO Criminal Division.
