ST. PAUL, Minn. – Jack Eichel and the Buffalo Sabres edged the Minnesota Wild 3-2 Monday night at Xcel Energy Center.

The rookie phenom scored the game winner for the Sabres, shorthanded, at 5:44 of the third period.

Minnesota scored the first and third goals in the back-and-forth game, meaning Eichel's goal was the first — and only — time the Sabres had the lead.

Jared Spurgeon scored the first goal at 13:12 of the first period, assisted by Zach Parise and Mikael Grandlund. Nicolas Deslauriers tied it for the Sabres at 18:28 of the same period.

In the second, Grandlund put the Wild back up, 2-1 with assists by Parise and Ryan Suter at 11:04.

Matt Moulson tied it for the Sabres at 1:36 of the third period, assisted by Eichel and Zemgus Girgensons. Then Eichel's goal at 5:44 wrapped up the scoring.

The Sabres next play Ottawa in Buffalo on Wednesday.
