WRIGHTS CORNERS — The Niagara County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Bureau is looking into a case of fake U.S. currency that a male attemped to pass off at Tops Market, 3949 Lockport-Olcott Road.

According to the NCSO report, the man had tried to purchase items at the self check out station using the fake bill around 12:15 a.m. Aug. 14. After the self check out station refused the bill multiple times, the man asked for help from the store clerk. When the store clerk swiped the bill with a counterfeit detecting pen, it left a dark mark, indicating it was fake.

The man said he had received the bill two days earlier from Tops Market in Lewiston when he cashed his paycheck. He further said he hadn't had any problems with any other money he received from that transaction.

The counterfeit currency was secured by patrol and logged in as evidence at the Niagara County Sheriff's Office.

No charges were immediately filed.

  1. A rule of thumb is you never carry more than one fake bill at a time. Read that years ago.
