Sue Mawhiney
Sue A. Mawhiney announced her candidacy this afternoon for the office of City Treasurer.

The YWCA employee says the office requires an "independent, objective properly trained individual." Mawhiney notes that she has a bachelors and a masters degree in business, as well as experience in the financial industry.

Mawhiney, who has the endorsement of the Democratic party, promises monthly status reports if elected.

Her announcement follows below in its entirety.
I am running for this office in order to provide the residents of this community with an opportunity to elect a qualified, dedicated, individual prepared to serve you in a professional and responsible manner.

I have nearly 20 years of experience in the financial industry. I have a bachelor and masters degree in business. I am currently employed at the YWCA of Niagara. During my prior employment at First Niagara Bank, I conducted internal reviews and held management positions. I do therefore have the tools to manage a department such as the treasurer’s office in a competent, effective, and economical fashion.

I am currently serving on the Board for Meals on Wheels and a member of All Saints Church.

I will provide the taxpayers of this community with reports on the status of the city’s finances on a monthly basis.

I believe most strongly in transparency and accountability.

In order to carry out the duties and responsibilities of an elected Treasurer, one must be independent and accountable to the public.

We need an independent, objective properly trained individual that will provide the public with the information they not only require but are entitled to as they pertain to the finances of the City of Lockport.

I pledge to be a dedicated servant of the people and I will be accountable to the public, not to the politicians with self serving motives.

I have read the duties of the treasurer as delineated in the city charter and I believe that I will faithfully carry out those mandates.

I am honored and humbled to have received endorsements of both the city and county Democratic committees.

I welcome your support and look forward to meeting with as many of you as possible during the coming months.
Mawhiney is the third announced candidate for the treasurer's post. Incumbent City Treasurer Mike White is seeking re-election and fellow Republican, Alderman John Lombardi has announced his intent, as well.
