Local and national chalk artists will have a chance to display their talents and compete for prizes at the third annual Sweet Chalk Festival on July 11-12.

The event, sponsored by the Lockside Art Center, will take place at the Pine Street Parking lot (6 Pine Street), next to the Flight of Five Winery, and will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

The headliners will be creating a 3D pirate ship, a Superhero, Botticelli's Venus and Seurat's Sunday on the Grand Jatte. In addition, students are encouraged to get involved and share their artistic talents. Students interested in participating should visit Sweetsweetsummer.com to submit an application. Space is limited so artists who wish to display their work should apply as soon as possible.

High school seniors and college student artists will compete for a $500 scholarship for the “Best in Show.” There will also be a $250 prize for younger students.

“In the past two years, the Sweet Chalk Festival has become a tradition for many in the Western New York area,” according to event originator and organizer Ellen Martin. “We’ve had tremendous local and national talent each year – and this year’s event promises to be even better.  For younger chalkers we selected a Pirate theme to coincide with the Olcott Pirate Festival – and Flowers to tie in Lockport in Bloom.”

This event is free to the public and has been made possible through generous donations from the Grigg Lewis Foundation.
