Former New York Gov. George Pataki this morning announced his candidacy for president in the 2016 election.
"Washington has grown too big, too powerful, too expensive and too intrusive," the three-term Republican governor said in a YouTube video made available on his website, GeorgePataki.com. "It is time to stand up, protect our freedom and take back this government."
The campaign says a "formal announcement" will be made at 11 a.m. at an event in New Hampshire.
Pataki has increased his profile of late, appearing as a pundit on Fox News and CNN, and attending the Iowa Republican Lincoln dinner on May 17.
Pataki is the second New Yorker to throw his proverbial hat into the ring for presidential election in 2016. Former Sen. Hillary Clinton announced her candidacy for the Democratic nomination on April 12.
