Don’t let the sunshine and warm temperatures fool you. It’s hockey season in Lockport. This past weekend saw two days of hockey camps at the Cornerstone Ice Arena as the Lockport Express Junior A hockey team prepares for its second season.

Saturday’s and Sunday’s sessions each began with 45 minutes of Dryland Training by Skate Ahead at 2pm, followed by 90 minutes of on-ice workouts.  Then coaches Frank Vecchio and David Kasperek ran the training on the ice. Most of the time was spent drilling the team on various scenarios and giving the goalies some shots. Coach Kasperek kept the skaters moving and taught them what is expected of them at the junior level.

For the on-ice portion of the day, they finished the weekend with a scrimmage between the white team and the green team. Both teams were flying up and down the ice. Among the junior team hopefuls, 9 or 10 players from the inaugural Express team skated along. There were some hard hits and some fun between last year’s players while on the ice. It was fun seeing some hockey back at the arena today.  This fall will be upon us in no time.

The junior team hopefuls, upon entering the arena and registering with Mrs Vecchio, were treated to the sight of awards presented to the Lockport Express. The inaugural season for the Lockport Express in the NA3EHL was a very successful one. Along with making the playoffs, the team also cleaned up at the NA3EHL annual awards by winning "General Manager of the Year" (head coach and general manager Frank Vecchio), "Organization of the Year," and "Rookie of the Year" (Tony Merante). The Express now have the hardware to show off as a testament to the team's hard work and the support of the fans in Lockport.

Next up for the Lockport Express are the Junior team tryouts June 13-14 at the Cornerstone Arena. June 13th includes Dryland Training at 3:30pm, followed by a question and answer presentation. The on ice tryout will be at 6:10pm on Saturday and 3:10 on Sunday.
