OLCOTT — A pair of Washington Street residents were treated for smoke inhalation and three families were forced from their homes due to a fire early this morning.
Niagara County Sheriff's deputies and Olcott Vol. Fire Co. responded to the fire at 5982 Washingon St. after receiving a call reporting a fire in one of the building's apartments.
When fire personnel from Olcott Vol. Fire Co. arrived they discovered an working structure fire. NCSO patrol arrived and assisted the fire department with the evacuation of the building, which contained three apartments.
All tenants were able to get out of the building, with two tenants suffering from smoke inhalation. Olcott, Miller Hose, and Barker Vol. Fire Companies were able to quickly extinguish the fire and save most of the building.
NCSO says that it appears the fire started in a basement apartment, however, the cause of the fire and amount of damage is unknown and the investigation is continuing by the Niagara County Origin and Cause Team.
Displaced families are being assisted by the Red Cross.
