ENP STAFF REPORTS
news@eastniagarapost.com
Former New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver was indicted this morning by a federal grand jury on charges of fraud and extortion.
The former speaker is alleged to have illegally gained from nearly $4 million in bribes and kickbacks from businesses that profited from decisions he made or pushed in the Assembly over the past 15 years.
Each of his three charges carries a possible 20 years in jail.
While Silver relinquished his role as speaker following his Jan. 22 arrest, he remains a member of the Assembly and has said he’s “confident” he will be “vindicated.”
Following Silver's arrest, many organizations called for sweeping ethics reforms in Albany.
