TOWN OF LOCKPORT — Something will be brewing Thursday morning at the Town of Lockport IDA as the board will hold a public hearing for a brewery that hopes to set up shop on South Transit Road.

The NY Beer Project, a planned $3.8 million microbrewery near the county line, is slated to hold a restaurant with and outdoor patio in addition to the brewery itself and a beer-tasting room. Future plans could include a banquet room, as well.

Town of Lockport Supervisor Marc Smith said he isn't positive exactly what tax incentives may be offered but said, "we're looking to something similar to what Woodcock Brothers got in Wilson," although the Wilson project cost about half as much as the NY Beer Project is expected to cost.

The planned brick building is designed to appear as though it were a two-story 19th-century factory located on a four-acre parcel owned by Kevin and Kelly Krupski, who hope that construction could begin in April and be completed within six months.

Smith said he doesn't envision any problems with the project's approval but wants to make sure that everything is done properly.

"It's a wonderful project," he said. "I think it's something that should be wildly successful."

He said that he and David Kinyon, administrative director of the Town IDA, have been actively seeking a microbrewery to set up shop in the town for approximately three years — and talking with the Krupskis for about six months.

The brewery will also be a topic at the Town of Lockport Planning Board meeting Feb. 17 and the Niagara County Planning Board later this month. The IDA hearing will be held at 8 a.m. Thursday in the IDA Conference Room at 6560 Dysinger Road.
