ENP STAFF REPORTS

The New York State Police have launched a series of online question and answer sessions to better serve the people of New York State through social media.

The State Police have been hosting “Twitter Town Halls” on the Division’s official Twitter page.

The hour-long online forums give the public a chance to ask a Member of the State Police questions on a variety of topics.

During the Town Hall, Twitter followers are able to ask a question using the NYSP Twitter handle, @nyspolice.

A State Police member who has been designated for the Twitter Town Hall topic then answers the question using the followers handle and the hashtag #NYSPTTH.

State Police are also posting relevant tips and statistics on Twitter throughout the hour-long question and answer session.

Today, NYSP focused on the state police SWAT team. Upcoming Twitter Town Hall topics and guests include:

  • Jan. 29 – School and Community Outreach Coordinator
  • Feb. 5 – NYSP Dive Team (SCUBA)
  • Feb. 12 - Winter Preparedness Tips
  • Feb. 19 - CCSERT (Contaminated Crime Scene Emergency Response Team)

To alert followers of the week’s Twitter Town Hall topic, State Police are posting videos and still photos on the Division’s social media pages. Posted the day before and day of a Twitter Town Hall, the videos and photos also allow the week’s featured member to introduce themselves to the public.

The New York State Police launched their social media pages in November of 2012. The agency now has more than 135,000 followers on Facebook and more than 13,000 followers on Twitter.

The official State Police Facebook and Twitter pages allow the public to learn more about the State Police, its specialty units and members. On the pages, State Police post important public safety information on road closures, crime prevention tips, as well as information on how the public can help in investigations.
