DETROIT — Up by three goals in the first, the Buffalo Sabres found a way to lose to the Detroit Red Wings Sunday night.

Drew Stafford got the scoring started early with a wrist shot 1:46 into the first period, assisted by Cody Hodgson and Andrej Meszaros. Tyler Ennis made it 2-0 at 10:21 on a deflected shot by Nikita Zadorov, also assisted by Andre Benoit. And Chris Stewart made it 3-0 at 13:37 with a slapshot, assisted by Ennis and Zadarov.

Then the Red Wings offense woke up.

One minute into the second period, Gustav Nyquist scored a power play goal on a deflected Henrik Zetterberg shot, assisted by Niklas Kronwall. At 04:07 Drew Miller made it 3-2 on a slapshot, assisted by Joakim Andersson and Danny DeKeyser. The Red Wings tied it at 10:08 with a Tomas Tatar wrist shot.

In the third, Zetterberg scored on a backhand shot 1:59 into the period, assisted by Pavel Datsyuk and Tatar. Zetterberg made it 5-3 with a power play goal at 5:05. Gustav Nyquist and Justin Abdelkader were awarded the assists. Ennis scored another for Buffalo at 8:31, assisted by Matt Moulson. Finally, Zetterberg made it 6-3 at 11:59, assisted by Kyle Quincey and Danny DeKeyser.

The Sabres next game is Tuesday at 9 p.m. against the Calgary Flames.
