A year after graduating from High School he and 3 buddies enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps. While taking primary flight training in Cape Girardeau Mo he met Ema Fae Joyce who later became his wife.  After winning his wings as pilot and B 17 training he was assigned a crew and a new B17 to be flown to England en route he diverted to Lockport for a farewell buzzing up Main St. His combat tour consisted of 35 missions over Germany.
